These things always present awkward moments for some. As we were planning the EQP said in another ward he was in they were giving out goodies but were giving them out first to sisters of distinction, most kids, most grandkids, etc. Anyway, one asked for the youngest mother instead of newest mother. An embarrassed 16 year old girl went and collected her potted flower."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

The whole flowers and make a big deal thing is a traditional that is calcifying into something more, I think. The sacrament service should certainly center around mothers, just as fathers day centers around fathers, but more than this is patronizing/pedestalizing in my view. And creates some awkwardness as has been highlighted. I even think that the topic is sensitive enough that the speakers should be chosen with care.
On the other hand, we shouldn't just ignore it. I'm thinking of one of the posts from Easter that said that the sacrament meeting was about Joseph Smith or some such. That seems silly too.

Bishop MeppenOriginally posted by Surfah View PostWhat do you guys/gals do?
I'm curious because our ward goes bonkers for it. I usually didn't care but now that I got put in the EQ presidency I have to help plan for it. The entire 3rd hour is a luncheon for the women. The men take over all the classes for the women and they get a lunch prepared by a chef and restaurant owner in our ward complete with linens, centerpieces, flowers, etc. It's absolutely ridiculous. Most of our freaking meager budget goes to this thing every year. I am in charge of the linens and center pieces. Hopefully the restaurant owner is able to do the food again because if not then we're screwed. I wish I knew who started this tradition in our ward because each year since has to be bigger and better and it's out of hand. I want to go to Home Depot and buy a flat of flowers to hand out but there would be gnashing of teeth if this happened.
Maybe I am also just bitter because we jonly get a cookie on Father's Day. I'd rather give you girls the priesthood than have to put on this show.

My father was HPGL for the last 5 years and my mother was in the RS presidency. So my dad was doing the luncheon for the most part during that time span with input from my mother and what the sisters wanted, or better said, expected. My dad was released 2 weeks ago and they just made our former EQP the new HPGL. This is when I went into the EQP. The first thing he said was thank goodness he doesn't have to do that luncheon anymore.
Is someone being avoided?
The thing is a big deal to the mothers in this ward. I think it would create more hard feelings if the bishopric nixed it. It is a cool thing to do and I know that most of the people involved really enjoyed themselves. I know I did. It felt great to be able to give back to the women/mothers of the ward...especially my MIL and wife.Last edited by FN Phat; 04-29-2010, 11:53 AM.I'm your huckleberry.

Me too!Originally posted by Surfah View PostThat surprises me.
He tried that with the EQ and as part of the EQP w/him and Bret I was the only one that spoke up and said I am not so sure that this is a good idea. They tried it once and it failed. I agree.Originally posted by Mrs. Funk View PostThat said, I think this is really ridiculous of your ward to do. It's expensive and not a good allocation of the ward budget. How about just letting church out early so moms can go home and take a nap?
I'm a tad aghast that they do this on Sunday in lieu of a worship service or lesson. How about after church or on a weekday? I thought the whole point of relieving the teachers of their callings was so they could enjoy a RS lesson, something some of them have not been able to do in a while.
Maybe I'm overreacting.

we had a Bishop that on Mother's Day and Father's Day, we would only have Sacrament and the rest of the day was to be spent with Mother/Father however the family deemed.

They do have some sort of lesson, usually the RS pres. reads a poem and cries through it.Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostI agree.

I am a married father over 30, and I consider Father's Day a bye week. I usually go on a motorcycle ride and consider what a crappy dad I am. It is a family tradition.Originally posted by beelzebabette View PostAs a single woman over 30, I consider Mother's Day a bye week so I have no idea what my ward does.Awesomeness now has a name. That makes me sad to hear. I think of Mothers' Day as a celebration of womanhood and not just women with children. To me, the definition of mother goes beyond the typical woman-who-bore-a-child ideal.Originally posted by beelzebabette View PostAs a single woman over 30, I consider Mother's Day a bye week so I have no idea what my ward does.
And... A couple of years ago, in our old ward, the one UD grew up in, they gave out a 3X5 picture of Jesus in a cheap frame. Talk about LAME. UD, tell these good folks what YOU did when YOU were in charge of it that year...

I asked my talented wife to help me and, such is the graciousness and kindness of said wife, she actually did 99% of the work.Originally posted by SuperGabers View PostAnd... . Mother's Day is Mother's Day and not Celebration of Women Day. I'm happy to take my mother a card and a gift and skip the Pres Uchtdorf reread in RS & Sacrament Meeting.

None taken. I understand. The years before I had my kids, I felt left out and pissed off because of all the hullabaloo. Perhaps this was my way of putting salve on the wound.Originally posted by beelzebabette View PostNo disrespect intended, but

I was in Paris for my internship for Mother's Day of 2008. They made Mpfunk take home the potted flower that was intended for me. Needless to say, it died and moreoverOriginally posted by beelzebabette View PostNo disrespect intended, but
