Obama is smart for not doing anything to quash these rumors. I doubt there is anyone who buys this crap that would become an Obama supporter if he did. This just makes Republicans look stupid, I wish the RNC would come out and try to put an end to all this.

              A birther? Not!

I am not a birther and should have said so more emphatically. If I seemed unprepared to defend their positions, it is because I have not studied their concerns in detail and have not given them any credence. I have deleted emails about the Kenyan birth certificate as quickly as I deleted emails about the Hawaiian birth certificate. I’m sure if any challenge was warranted, the Clinton's would have found it during the primary.

What is clear is that there is controversy. Even by CNN’s poll, 20% believe the president was not born in the United States, and 23% don’t know. This bill seemed like a good way to avoid future controversies. I agree that it would have been a good idea to have had this bill take effect in 2016 so that it did not seem that we were going after President Obama. Personally, while I disagree with his policies, as I said on the House floor and on CNN, I assume that he is the legitimate president of the United States.

However, having looked into this issue, I found that the State of Arizona does not check to assure whether someone is qualified to run for President or not. The national parties merely send a message to our Secretary of State saying who they are running as a candidate. To our knowledge, there is no national organization that checks qualifications. The Federal Elections Commission does not verify this. Nor does any other authorized governmental agency, as far as I can find out. If you're asking citizens to believe the Republican or Democratic Parties, or the media, I believe our voters are entitled to know more.

I've learned that when there is an independent running such as Ross Perot or Ralph Nader, no one checks their qualifications either.

I have always assumed that the issue of President Obama's legitimacy as a citizen had been settled. As I said on the program, I believe he was born in Hawaii. I thought our bill would be a simple way to end this controversy for future generations. My grandson has to show his birth certificate to play t-ball or to get in school. I have to show a driver's license to fly to San Diego. You have to prove you're qualified to vote. It seems to me that if you want to be Commander in Chief, it's not unreasonable to request that you present the necessary documentation demonstrating your qualifications to be president.

In my humble opinion, when we are criticized for asking a person to prove that he meets the Constitutional requirements of the position, there is something wrong with this picture. It might be unreasonable or unnecessary if there were some national clearing house for all Presidential candidates, but there’s not.

On the other hand, I am worried about voters, however, who are tolerant of a society that does not have someone substantiate their qualifications for the highest office in the land, while having my grandson prove his age to play T-ball. Perhaps I should be more concerned about my country than I thought.

By the way, contrary to reports, the bill did not require the production of a birth certificate, but merely the production of authenticating documentation. That could mean a birth certificate, a certified copy, an affidavit from an appropriate official, or other verifying information.

                  Also Welcome.

Tryor: I don't think it's entirely unreasonable to have a formal process for demonstrating that a person meets the requirements. What is unreasonable is the way you were expressing doubts about Obama's citizenship throughout the program.

In the case of Obama's citizenship, we are talking about facts that are beyond dispute. Obama is a citizen, yet you chose to dispute that fact on national TV.

Also, I'm glad you're here. I wasn't serious about the recommend thing. Please introduce yourself in Ellis Island. We need more celebrities here.

I'm confused. Are you talking about your original post or the post that you gave as a reason why it should be in the foyer (Because you are of the opinion he should not have a recommend)..

I am not sure which post you are falling on your sword for...
