Sweet! Sister Beck will speak in about 15 minutes. I save her talks for future disciplining of my wife.

I love that the very first two talks of conference are about a man's place and a woman's place. O_o

I was astounded when Pres. Packer started talking about Correlation. I couldn't believe it. It was a much more engaging experience to listen to his talk after just having read all of the stuff about Correlation that UD and Goat had posted links to. It was a mind-bending experience.

As an aside, President Packer was looking very different than he normally does, at least to me. His time might be coming up soon.

I actually thought to myself as I have been listening to them, "I bet Mrs. Funk is getting a kick outta these."

They weren't that bad, really. I actually really liked Sister Beck's emphasis on personal revelation for women.

But yeah. It's so classic that right off the bat, we were told all about the proper roles for men and women. I sort of chuckled during Packer's talk, knowing that Sister Beck was up next.

In a general sense, Correlation is the Church's program to coordinate published and disseminated materials for internal consistency between subjects and topics and external consistency with current Church emphasis, goals, and doctrine.

There is a lot more to this, and I don't do a very good job of really explaining it (I've had confirmation of this; in an attempt to explain to several people on different occasions what I had been reading about, all I get is blank stares, shrugs and "oh, that's nice" comments) but I would encourage you to pursue this series. It's not the only word on the topic, but is by far the most comprehensive that I've seen.

Sure, you know when you hear people give testimony about how they had been praying about something prior to General Conference and had found their answer through a talk someone gave? It's like that

Ok, not really, but it was really interesting to me since I had just been reading a bunch about it, and then to hear Pres. Packer talk about things like "Correlation" or "Priesthood" and talk about Pres. Lee, and to have a lot of the subtext and history of the subject be fresh in my mind made the talk much more interesting than it probably was to about 99% of the people who listened to it.

IJR, have you read the DOM bio by Prince? There is a great chapter in there about correlation.

I actually haven't. I've heard good things about it, which is why it's on my summer reading list, along with Quinn's Mormon Hierarchy series and the Benchmark Book version of Lengthen Your Stride. I don't know if I'll have time enough for all of it, but I'm gonna give it a shot.

Have you read the Correlation: an Uncorrelated History series that UD and Goat posted links to? If you have, how do you feel it lines up with the chapter from the Prince bio? I imagine that they approach it from different angles, but most likely have overlapping facts.

To be honest, most of my Mormon history education has been on the internets. I've read Rough Stone Rolling, Great Basin Kingdom, Adventures of a Church Historian, and Leonard Arrington: A Historian's Life, but that's it.

Great book. You will enjoy it.

Is it just me, or has the music been [I]exceptional[I] this session of conference? I very often find MoTab music snooze-worthy, but it's been energetic when appropriate and stunningly beautiful at many points.
