Warning Signs

The SL Trib had an article on Utah's high porn consumption today. They mentioned these warning signs:

1. Vulgar language
2. Extreme religiosity
3. Avoidance of church activities

It's interesting that 2 + 3 are both warning signs, but maybe it's not surprising. People react in different ways.

A quote from the article: "Last year, a study published in the Journal of Economic Perspectives showed Utah had the nation's highest online porn subscription rate per thousand home broadband users, at 5.47, from 2006 to 2008."

Question: Why are people subscribing? Don't they know there is free stuff out there?

I will get the apologetics ball rolling and point out that the study "probably" culled its data from SLC and Park City where the highest concentration of non-members live.

If I remember the survey correctly, they drew from SLC and also from Utah County, which was higher.

I think the primary factors for high Utah rates were:

1. Utah has a high broadband connection rate per capita
2. Utah porn consumers show a marked preference for privately consumed porn at home rather than purchasing Girlie Magazines at the market or through subscription, or going to sex shops, or knocking back a bunch of cool ones with the boys after work at the Spearmint Rhino.

I think #1 doesn't account for the statistics, since the numbers are per 1000 broadband users.

Although I must add: If you're paying for porn, you're doing it wrong.
