The best time to volunteer to do stuff is in opening exercises for priesthood meeting. That's when the things like people moving and people needing help withsome kind of labor (sodding a yard, digging an irrigation system, etc) get brought up. I always volunteer my two sons for EVERYTHING.
For about the last 7 months, I've missed a lot of priesthood opening exercies, because I have a son in the nursery, and I end up using opening exercises as a time to evaluate whether he's in a good enough mood for me to leave him in nursery or take him to priesthood with me (I generally pop in and out of the nursery durning sunday school, but priesthood is more discussion based, and I don't really like to disrupt it by leaving. The baby a penchant for throwing up when he feels like he's been abandoned. It's best for everyone involved if an accurate appraisal of his mood is conducted prior to leaving him for the last 45 minutes of church).
Last week, I actually made it to PH-OE, and when a request for help came, I promptly volunteered my 18 & 16 year-old sons. To which my 18 y.o. (with Aspergers) said loudly - "Why aren't you in the nursery where you belong?" Our Bishop turned bright red holding in a laugh.
YM get their share of volunteer opportunities as well...
