My mom was thrilled when she learned that I was going to that mission.

We were amongst the first North Americans to go back to Bolivia after the murders. I didn't care. I knew that if I were to be murdered while on my mission, I would go straight to the Celestial Kingdom!

I have lots of history with bolivia. Pipeline between Brazil and Bolivia. Refining system purchased by petrobras leading to the near border wars as bolivia doesn't own an ounce of its refined petroleum products (100% owned by brazil). Good times.

technically, I lived in Brazil for 2 months of my mission....Corumba, or however it is spelled. Freezing cold in the winter, btw. We lived on the Brazil side and then went over the border every day to work. I thought it was so cool to have Corn Flakes that said Bom Dia or whatever it said on the box. Frankly, it was just cool to finally have corn flakes.

My favorite part of Bolivia was eating a grip of empanadas and hot chocolate at a rural mercado in Santa Maria for like 30 cents.

You too went to Munich? I'd forgotten that. How many decades ago? My two and a half decade anniversary is this year...

Austria, actually, 71-73. Hitler's Nest (near Berchtesgaden) is in Germany, but that little sliver of Deutschland belonged to the Austria Mission back in the day, and Mozart and Beethoven lived in Vienna through much of their productive lives. But now, Austria is part of the Munich Mission, causing one Viennese member to observe that "Where Hitler failed, the Church has succeeded."

It would take pages and pages to list all of the historical, scientific, and artistic events that took place in those cities. I'll just limit it to one and call it good: The Renaissance.

Historic events:

- Polyphemus got ticked and chucked rocks at Homer. He also chucked a big rock at Acis and killed him for banging Galatea. Polyphemus had a bad temper.

- The Carthaginians destroyed Eryx in the First Punic War

- After kicking ass in the Trojan War, Diomedes founded Brindisi (the 4th city I served in) and Manfredonia farther to the north

- birthplace of Vito Corleone

- Patton landed at Gela

Inventions:

- catapult invented by Dionysius I

- The people of Sicily claim that ice cream was invented there by the ancient Romans that inhabited the island using the snow from Mt. Etna.
