Historic events or things invented in your mission

A lot of cool stuff happened in my mission (Frankfurt, Germany). It's not like anyone understands German geography very much, but my mission was essentially the middle third of old West Germany. It ran along the border with Luxemborg and France until approximately the point where the Rhein makes up the border between Germany and France. We had approximately 1/3 of the Black Forest at the southern tip of our mission. We had the northwest corner of Baden-Wurtemburg (the state where Stuttgart is, although Stuttgart was not in our mission, we had the Baden portion of Baden-Wurtemburg), practically all of Hessen (Frankfurt's state), the far northwest corner of Bavaria, the Saarland and the Rheinland-Pflaz (the German wine country).

Here are the three major historic events that occurred in my mission

1. The printing press was invented in Mainz by Johan Guttenburg

2. The gasoline-engine automobile was invented in Mannheim by Karl Benz.

3. The Diet of Worms. Martin Luther was called to appear before the Holy Roman Emperor and answer for his revolt against the Catholic church. Itwas essentially Martin Luther's disciplinary hearing.

Some BYU prof (the name escapes me) claimed (claims?) that Lake Atitlan is the Waters of Mormon.

That's the same lake where two missionaries drowned back in the early 90s (BlackBart on CB recently revealed that one of the missionaries was his brother.)

This sounds like the worst mission in the world. I'm going to tell any son I have to take four years of Spanish. The Eastern Bloc would be absolutely miserable.

You went to Fremont? That's where I grew up, he used to drop off his nieces at my high school in his Hummer. I honestly believed he was too legit to quit.

On my mission, my last city was the birthplace of the Lumiere brothers and Victor Hugo, the interesting part being they were neighbors (although born at different times).

On p-day once we went to a city in Switzerland called Yverdon. Nearby is a castle called Grandson where a regionally famous battle took place:

The castle is in excellent shape and you could easily see from its walls how the events would have gone down. It was really interesting for me to be at the very spot where hundreds were massacred in a medieval battle.

Until then, the only exposure to battles was the Medieval Times we attended in Orlando. Since then I've been to the D-day beaches and other places around Europe, but that first battle site was fascinating to me.

I took two years of Russian in high school and ended up in Austria. You never know where they're going to send you.

I didn't go on mission to Germany, but I went to high school in Nurnberg, we passed the bldg that the trials were held every week on the way to church.


Also the HQs of Adidas and Puma were in the town where we lived.
