BTW, Quinn's Extensions of Power details the church's financial crisis in the 1960s. Apparently, the news got so grim that they quit announcing figures in General Conference (and have never resumed). I'll supply more information when I get home to the books.

But what of this financial crisis in the Church? Obviously this is something that would not be desirable for print but what is known about the severity of this crisis?

My grandparents told me that during that time, very few active members of the church paid a full tithe, therefore the church's overhead was considerably lower. The members were asked for monthly, two year donations to build new meetinghouses. Missionaries weren't given the monthly stipends that they receive today, and there wasn't enough money to cover operating costs. Joseph Fielding Smith wanted to build temples in Ogden and Provo, but they turned out to be a very simple design, much cheaper than the previous "large size" temples including using donated labor for the first time in 50 years.

Sounds like more than a few people wanted to kill SWK.

Surely Western Philosophy originated with the Greeks...not to mention the seeds of science beginning with Aristotle. And you can't discount the ancient Greeks' contributions to government, drama and epic poetry...

This discussion reminds me a little of the court room scene in "Flash of Genius" where the defendant's expert argues that his invention was nothing more than existing parts arranged in a new way, and on cross the plaintiff has him read the first lines from Tale of Two Cities to make the point that none of the words or phrases were new.

I will defer to those who know more, but just because there is no new thing under the sun doesn't mean credit shouldn't be given to those who see things in a new light, or even just popularize them.
