John Dehlin is thinking about bringing Mormon Stories back

What do you find useful in podcasts? I've probably listened to less than five in my life, because they tend to move too slowly. Wouldn't you rather read the material or actually be involved in the discussion one on one? Smart people's fascination with podcasts interests me. They sound like executive summaries of memoranda written to partners in charge."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."
Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

Yeah, I figured you wouldn't listen to them. You are already an expert on Mormonism!Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostI've never listened to an exmo or progmo podcast--never--and I'm a big podcast consumer. Shit-town, Serial, This American Life (sometimes), New Yorker Radio Hour, New York Times Book Review, Radio Lab et al.--I'm a huge fan. But not of exmo and progmo podcasts.
I seem to recall you being a fan of Dehlin when he was booted from the church. And now he is a nobody.

I listen to them when I drive. I think my kids get something out of them while we're driving. No, I don't sit there at home and listen to podcasts, except for Shit-Town because my wife wanted to do it with me, and that was kind of like a novel. Probably the greatest podcast ever in my opinion.Originally posted by Topper View PostWhat do you find useful in podcasts? If I've posted anything about Dehlin, it's next to nothing. I'm not even his facebook friend.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostYeah, I figured you wouldn't listen to them. You are already an expert on Mormonism!

Except he's just wrong. Podcasts don't sound like executive summaries of memoranda to the partners in charge. The good ones are quite skillful the way they layer storytelling narrative with interviews, archival stuff, etc., while taking pains to provide vivid and artful descriptions. Generally, I find them a lot more interesting than televised documentaries. I like relying on imagination stimulated by the literary content for imagery.Originally posted by falafel View PostYou are like a bot, sent from some other planet to observe mankind. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Not to get off topic, but every time I see this thread I think of this picture.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Every time I see this thread, I wonder what the correct way to pronounce his name is.Originally posted by Moliere View PostNot to get off topic, but every time I see this thread I think of this picture.

Is it DEhlin, with an emphasis on the first syllable? Or is it DehlIn, with an emphasis on the second. No idea.

I liked Shittown too. Not sure I would call it the greatest podcast ever but I was enlightened and entertained. Thanks SU.Originally posted by SeattleUte View Post... except for Shit-Town because my wife wanted to do it with me, and that was kind of like a novel. Are you listening to Ted Talks, or just miscellaneous podcasts? If you listen to these, when do you have time to just think without the white noise of such things? Do you listen to them in Spanish?Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostI listen to them when I drive. I think my kids get something out of them while we're driving. I don't know about your podcast player, but mine has a 'play' button, and a 'stop/pause' button.Originally posted by Topper View PostAre you listening to Ted Talks, or just miscellaneous podcasts? So far, so good.
