So i had occasion to sit at the Genius Bar in the Apple Store in the Brea Mall accompanying my BFF on a particularly sticky fix that took almost four hours. It was a nice work surface so I pulled out my sketch book to work on some designs for an upcoming book. I was the singular old school sketcher in a roomful of digiteria. It's not mentally taxing work, so I dropped in on many adjacent conversations. I thought the issues would be broken PowerBooks or iPhones or iPads. Questions about warranties and fixes and covered replacements- that sort of thing. Nope. All of the conversations were about information- where was it, how to get it, how to lose it, how to get it back. How to change information, how to personalize information, who could see your information, how to block information from specific parties or everyone.
It was pretty eye opening. We are so attuned to the hardware- is it powerful? Does it convey status? Does it do everything that we want? Are we paying too much for it? Are we spending too little on it? But pretty soon we will get to the point that no one cares a fig about the hardware-- it's all about the information.
