  • Do You Enjoy/Look Forward to GC?

From scottie's thread about women speaking in GC, I began to wonder which of you really look forward, truthfully, to GC. I wonder if I have a problem because I don't look forward to it... other than the sense it is a free Sunday... and I don't watch it.

I wonder if it is kinda like a baseball game. I find being in the stand is much more enjoyable than watching it on TV. Same with GC?

We have very bad habits on this. I do DVR it and then wait and see what is controversial on CUF and watch that part. Actually, I have watched part of it the last couple times while I surfed. I really should do better on this, but like you I feel not a lot of motivation in that area.

I honestly look forward to it. I only watch Sunday and can do so from the comfort of my own home. I can switch to other things during the singing and prayers.

I find the talks to be generally more uplifting and of a loving nature than I do regular talks in church or Stake Conference.

I wouldn't say I look forward to it, but I enjoy it immensely. I usually watch all 5 sessions to some extent. I really feel uplifted after GC. I would support a move to quarterly GC and at least 20% of all prayers by Cistern.

I find the GC talks "batting average" for me is around 0.200. Is it worth 10 hours of my weekend to hear that 20%? I'm not always sure.

I look forward to GC as I can miss church on Sunday without feeling any guilt.

I love GC, great talks, lounge around eating in my sweats, always fall asleep Sunday afternoon and wake up to hear the prophet and most importantly no 6:30 meetings! I'm really stoked my son will be old enough to take to priesthood session this year. He will likely be bored out of his mind, but will love the Dairy Queen run afterwords.

You still feel guilt? Get over it man!
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

The guilt comes as my 4 year old faithfully asks me every week if I am coming to church with her, and I dutifully say no.

Have you already said why you don't go? I just know of couple people in my ward who are pretty well known to have apostatized and who don't want to be asked to do anything. They come and hang out with their family and seem to do okay. If you have already answered (I think maybe you have) can you link it? Just curious.

I fall in these two boats. I don't look forward to it but I enjoy the talks that are more relevant to me.

I actually enjoy listening to it on CD in my car more than when it is live probably because I cab selective and skip all the pornography talks.

I used to look forward to it and watched it faithfully. Now I look at it as the Mormon equivalent of an infomercial -- lots of big promises that fall way short in reality. I long for a GA that is willing to say "Hey, life's really tough and even perfect adherence to the Gospel isn't going to spare you or those you love from a lot of unfair pain and bitter, grinding, unrelenting suffering. And the Gospel isn't going to make it all better in this life and I really don't know how to explain that. You'll sort of have to figure that out by yourself. All we have to cling to really is the hope that someday it will all make sense if we continue faithful." Of course, that message doesn't sell very well and certainly doesn't inspire you to open your wallet. So, rather than get sucked in again, I just find something else to do, much to my wife's displeasure.

I agree that optimism is overrated. Oh, and that talk is given every GC but more so in April 2009

Funny you should refer to a talk by Elder Eyring. He's the master of the "I promise you..." talk.
