Remember to show up for tithing settlement

I had a bishop once who had a young family and didn't like having his Christmases messed up by tithing settlement. One year he studied the CHI and decided he didn't have to do TS in December, so he did it in October. He got away with it that once but was told not to do it again. I don't remember the reason he was given. I actually thought it was a great idea.

I thik the handbook says it is supposed to take place 'near the end of the year' and specifies that other guidlines would come from SLC.

Last week I saw the reminder in the ward bulletin right before Sac Mtg started and went quickly to the sign sheets. The sheets had just gone up and I got us the prime 1:20 pm slot on December 26. I'm pretty happy about that. I don't think mrs. myboynoah really appreciates all the things I do to facilitate our family's happiness.

I don't mind tithing settlement. It only takes ten minutes and it gives us a chance to have a nice visit with the bishop.

I usually declare in the halls. Have not shown up at times. I am ward membership clerk. And have to go Wednesday to update everyones contact information. Many people are going to cell phones and get rid of there land lines.

There is room for Primary and Secondary numbers on ward directory. If someone still has land line than I have to decide who to put up as secondary phone number. Can put husband and wife by cell phones.

My purpose will be to get everyoones phone and email addresses updated at tithing settlement.

I think it is a new emphasis around here. A few years ago I was the deacon's quorum advisor and we only had 5-6 envelopes we were taking around because everyone liked paying it with their tithing. Our SP asked that we start going door-to-door with everyone in the ward. We ignored it (thinking it was just a suggestion) and they really got after us. So I ordered envelopes and drew up routes for the entire ward. Those poor boys got yelled at for the first couple of months ("Why are you doing this? We pay with our tithing!") but everyone is used to it now.

In our ward the deacons take around the Ward Newsletter to every home and then just knock on doors for Fast Offerings for a few homes of members who have not opted out by paying "with their tithing."

I think it works well because then it feels like the Deacons actually have a purpose (delivering the Ward newsletter) even if they don't collect very many fast offerings.

We missed our appointment time on Sunday morning prior to church.

I was puking my guts out and we had family in town.

I feel bad that we wasted the Bishop's time, but I don't feel bad that we missed tithing settlement.

We got a letter every year that said we shouldn't start until November 15 and should be done by December 31. The tithing report was supposed to be submitted in mls by sometime in January.

Really wish my ward would take that approach. Let the family decide if they want Deacons to knock on the door or pay with tithing. Instead my SP has taken a hardline approach and AP have to knock on every family's door each month. Moreover, the mandate has been that two AP go to the door so have had to involve the teachers quorum as well. In all, we need 12 YM and 6 adult drivers to do FO every month. And the overwhelming majority of the ward just want to pay with tithing instead of being woken up at 9:00 AM on Fast Sunday. Instead of being a positive experience for the YM, they start making excuses to not do it because they are tired of hearing: "We'll pay with tithing later today". Perhaps it's good missionary preparation after all.

Why wont these people just take no for an answer?

Our phone rings last night:

Bishopric - Tomorrow night is the last night of tithing settlement and we haven't seen you yet. We are available from 750 to 900. When works for you?

Me - It doesn't. We pick up TK2 from bball at 745. We are also baking all night, every night for the rest of the week.

B - We really need to get this taken care of, can we set up a time?

Me - We pay online, so your records will show zero. Just put us down for full tithe payers and call it good. I will even bring in my PDF doc in mid January and show you.

B - We really need to see you. Part of the Bishop's responsibility.

Me - If I can come down solo, I will be there at 750. TW is picking up the kid.

B - That is fine. Remember...Church dress.

Me - I am not coming down in Church dress. It is going to be shorts and a Tshirt.

B - See you at 750.

Me - Bro. C.....you aren't getting your plate of cookies this year.



Seriously....leave it alone. I didn't sign up for a reason, and I understand that I should pay my FO local and I will do better next year. But I am about to finish a calender year and have not gone through a single book of checks. I have 4 left in the book. This is some type of record.

This throws my whole night off...do us both a favor and just check the box for me. Sheesh.

I went last night. It is the most painless church obligation there is, so I'm not going to complain.

I showed up sweaty and in shorts and a T-shirt because I had to come directly from a basketball game. Brought my 2 boys, but my wife couldn't make it. It's not even very awkward declaring a partial tithe. Over in 15 minutes with some encouragement to build up that food storage.

Our t-sett was this past Sunday. Only took a few mins and it was the first one after the block (primo time slot).

Overall pretty harmless. Gave the kids some sweet tarts and asked us all on a scale of 1-10 (10 being happiest) how happy we were. The curious thing was that he then said enthusiastically, "I want to hear some happy answers!"

After informing him that we were all very happy, we declared our tithe.

The Bish asked if we have taught our kids about tithing and we said yes. He then asked one of my daughters, "If you have $100 and you pay 10% for tithing, how much do you pay in tithing?" He did it in a very kid-friendly voice, speaking very slowly. Nevertheless, my daughter just turned 6 last week and hasn't mastered percentages yet, so she gave a blank stare. My wife was somewhat embarrassed so she explained my daughters age to the Bishop. The Bishop challenged us to "work on that with our kids" this upcoming year. I suppose he means basic arithmetic, and if so, I agree with his suggestion and will implement it.

He asked us if the amount on the sheet represented a full tithe and then said, "are you sure?" We reminded him that we had only recently moved into the ward so the tithing paid into our OC ward might not reflect on his current sheet. He then apologized for forgetting that we had just moved into the ward.

We shook hands and left.

As I have stated before, not exactly sure why we have t-sett.

All the more reason to follow Uncle Ted's advice and pay directly to church HC. Our bishop never even looked at the sheet or made reference to it, simply asked the question.
