  • Ward Social Events...

So with the post about Santa being fired earlier it got me thinking about Ward Social Activities. How often does everyone here go?

I have been to two in the last year. I went to the Father/son BBQ....because I was putting it on. I went to the Christmas Party last year because one of my HT families was in charge. Other than that I avoid them like the plague.

Anyone else like them? I don't care for most of my ward members or the "facade" that I have to put on acting like I am interested in what people are saying. Just don't feel like playing the game.

I don't like them. I never really have. I go to the ones that my wife really wants to. I know that it makes her happy and so I go without so much as a peep to show her support.

My Bishop asked me what I thought about ward activities. I told him it wouldn't bother me if we never had one again. I don't enjoy them. I only enjoy hanging out with a handful of people in my ward, and for those, i make an effort to do that outside of church.

My ward Christmas dinner was this evening and a member of the Q12 showed up and said, "You can no longer buy cards in the stores that say Merry Christmas, they all say Happy Holidays. So I encourage you to boldly show your neighbors and co-workers what you stand for by telling them, Merry Christmas!"

Is that true, about the cards? I wonder if one church member from West Hollywood wrote a letter about her struggle to find a Jesus Hallmark card while in Koreatown, and the discrimination was promptly applied to every store in the nation.

I've got cards we got last year that say "Merry Christmas" on them.

I only go to the activities that are for the whole family because I know my kids will enjoy seeing their friends. If it is an adult only ward or stake activity, I won't go. My policy is that if I'm going to pay a sitter to have an evening with my husband, it is going to be doing something we enjoy with other couples of our choosing. Not that I don't enjoy any adults at church. I just don't enjoy church adult activities.

I think being on the ward activities committee must be one of the rougher callings in the church, at least in wards with a wide range of ages. Nobody is pleased all the time. Some will complain about too many activities with kids, some about too many with adults. I say don't complain. If it is something you don't want to do, just don't go.

I am going to boycott the ward chili cook off next year on principle, even though my kids love that activity. They had the missionaries judge and the winner they picked did canned chili and added a few ingredients. Lame.

I hear the complaint about no cards with Merry Christmas all the time, so I went to a few stores just to browse and see. I saw many selections that had Merry Christmas. Also, I looked online at photo cards from various places -- Costco, Sears, etc. There were many options for Merry Christmas there as well.

You're scoring a D-minus in the whole persecution thing. Think of the good saints in Salt Lake City who have just been encouraged to overcome something that isn't there and say Merry Christmas to their homogeneous colleagues. I can't wait to hear the testimonies in 36 hours. Maybe I'll fast for the spirit to guide me to the right store.

Wow. That's the last calling I would have guessed. You must be more of a social butterfly than your CUF persona portrays. (Either that or you are the MacArthur of orgnization).

As much as I gripe about them at times, we usually don't miss them. And I have to admit that a few have pleasantly surprised me.

I think my ward strikes a nice balance in having 4 ward activities a year. The activity group tried to do one every month but the bishop put a stop to that before it even got started. Or bishop is a very reasonable person and decided if people really wanted to get together socially every month they can plan those events on their own.

I'm looking forward to the Xmas party this year. We have some awesome members that are seriously fun to talk to. That being said, the make or break portion of the party comes at the beginning when you have to pick a place to sit. If you choose wrong and end up by someone with screaming kids or the ward lunatic then the night is shot.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
