    LDS art

Do you consider this art? or more of a religious-political illustration?

After years of research, artist Jon McNaughton has created a painting that depicts Jesus Christ at the center of a gathering of many of America’s pivotal historial figures.

Definitely the latter. It's not art.

We could call this "art" if we could also call being held down and tazed by jackbooted Fox News correspondants "art."

I was at the Provo mall to see a movie a couple weeks ago with my wife and I saw the original of this painting displayed at the gallery across from the theater. I've noticed the gallery before but didn't realize this was the same artist. I was able to get my wife to laugh out loud explaining the various stuff in the painting, getting a dirty look from the old man tending the store, and successfully embarrassing my wife. Good times.

I saw that the other day. Actually, I saw a website that has the picture and as you scroll over the picture it explains who each of the figures are in the painting.

My basic feeling was that is what the "5,000 Year Leap" would look like if Cleon was a painter.

Oh, and art is in the eye of the beholder so I think asking that question is similar to asking if U2 sucks or not.

“it’s not a really good idea to begin discussing art by trying to define it”
IMO it is a fools errand to take a stand and state what is art or even high-art. Even the most brilliant of minds vehemently resists the urge.

Listen, if a crucifix in a glass of urine can be considered art and get government grant money to fund it, then this sure as hell qualifies as art.

I wasn't so much trying to declare something art or not as I was trying to describe my viewing experience.

I agree they are both art. I don't think this is good art. Piss Christ is better (in my opinion) and I'll tell you why. Viewed in the abstract piss Christ can look quite buautiful--this artful crucifix embedded in and seen through translucent amber. Then you find out the lovely amber setting is piss and it jars you. Does this LDS art contain a similar layering of or contradiction in meaning? Is the picture beautiful or original in its own right absent the political message?
