Persecution in California

I'm getting tired of hearing sacrament talks and testimonies about prop 8 and how the Mormons in California are persecuted. It's really getting old. Today some guy was giving this fantastic talk, but it all led up to a climax of whining about prop 8 and persecution.

Church leaders really screwed up on this one. They've turned anti-gay-marriagism into a central tenet of Mormonism.

You obviously haven't tried that. They don't just leave you alone, you know. Its much less painful to go than it is to constantly keep the blinds drawn, be ready to turn the lights off and hold perfectly still so it appears no one is home notwithstanding all the cars being in the driveway.

Bringing a book makes it much more tolerable.

So, what you're saying is just don't listen. Not a bad idea.

My ward must not be the norm, as nobody talks about persecution as a result of Prop 8. Perhaps it's because folks in my ward are more like me - apathetic to the plight of gays or anybody not in my stake.

I feel the same way, but, about all the whining and comments coming from those that believe that Church's support of Prop 8 was wrong.

The Church took a position, the membership responded, the proposition prevailed...life goes on. No screw up on our leaders' part.

In these parts, there has been little if any discussion about persecution. And I was pleased last night at a stake Christmas musical fireside when a Stake Presidency counselor gave the closing remarks and recounted a dozen or so incidents during the past year where members, primarily the youth, had performed various acts of kindness and service. I was holding my breath hoping he wouldn't trumpet the Prop. 8 effort and victory. He didn't, focusing solely on examples of people doing things to help others.

I really don't think I have heard one reference to Prop 8 persecution in my ward. Sounds like I know something to bring up next open mic session.
