  • Healthy Thai

Okay, I only have one healthy Thai recipe but it's pretty good.

Thai Basil Turkey (typically made with Pork and called Pad Krapao Mu)
Pound or so of extra lean ground turkey
2 or 3 finely sliced grean onions
2 or 3 garlic cloves, diced
1 1/2 cups of Thai Basil
    2 tbs oyster sauce
    2 tbs fish sauce
    2 tsp brown sugar
2 to 10 finely diced thai chilis or Sriracha to taste
1 egg sunny side up per dish (remove the yolk for extra healthy)
    Rice, brown if you'd like

    Cook your rice like normal
Spray your wok with PAM, heat to medium high. In a separate pan, start the eggs
Toss in the garlic and onions, let sizzle for about 30 seconds
Toss in the turkey until it loses it's blush, about 2 to 3 minutes
Put in the sauces, sugar and chili and toss for the next minute
Toss in the basil and remove from heat, the basil will wilt from the heat of the dish

Put the rice in a bowl, spoon some of the mixture on the rice and top with the egg. Enjoy!

*I don't have the fitday or calorie count, but it seems pretty darn healthy compared to the original version.

This looks really good, YO. Thanks for posting it. It will be dinner tomorrow at my house.

Sounds great. Most of the Thai we make at home has coconut milk -- 45 grams of fat per 13.5 oz can, with almost all calories from fat. Put that into fitday and watch your computer start smoking.

Looks great. I will give it a shot.

Are the thai basil and thai chilis something you would need to go to an asian market for, or might the be marquerading in the grocery store under some other name?

Some grocery stores will probably have both, but you may need to go into an Asian store.

What I recommend is to just pick up a thai basil start from Lowes or your local nursery and put it in a planter on your porch or windowsill. The start will be about two dollars and the planter and soil will be about five. For less than ten dollars and a few minutes of watering a week you can have an herb for use all summer.

You can do the same with peppers, but sriracha is a fine substitute.

We can get Thai basil at the local grocery stores.

But I took your advice and planted a small herb garden. We have mint and basil coming out our ears. Our lemon grass isn't doing much, however.

Mint grows like a weed. Don't be afraid to start pulling out extra growth if it starts taking over.

I've assumed that this recipe is 5 portions; if your portions differ, multiply these per-serving counts by 5, then divide by the number of portions you serve.

                  Calories: 173
                  Carbs: 8 g.
                  Fat: 6 g.
                  Fiber: neglig
                  Protein: 23 g.

Excludes egg yolks and brown rice.

We tried your recipe at our house last night and it was a hit. Thanks again.

Hey YOhio, we tried your dish tonight. It was a big hit. We will definitely make it again. Delicious and very easy to make. The family was a bit suspicious when I described it (I have had it in restaurants before, but they haven't), but they loved it. Served it with jasmine rice and stir-fried garlic pepper cauliflower and Thai grapefruit salad. Used fresh basil from the garden. I used pork instead of turkey (fitday can bite me). I might kick up the sugar just a touch next time. Thanks, man.

Glad you liked it Jeff. I owed you one for your masaman curry recipe that's been thrown in our monthly routine.

                              I still want this recipe.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.
