Bad casserole

My mom used to make one with hamburger, cream of mushroom soup, green beans, corn, a package of onion soup mix, with instant mashed potatoes on top.

It smelled awful and tasted worse.

Yeah my aunt makes that too, it's the Utah version of Shepherds Pie. Sometimes she sprinkles cheese atop the potato pearls.

Mmm, I like shepherd's pie, but I've only had it to use up leftover real mashed potatoes and never with cream-of-anything soup. Almost as good as my mom's meatloaf.

What makes a dish a casserole? I mean, couldn't lasagna be considered a casserole? Enchiladas? Eggplant parmesan?
