  • Bad casserole

Lebowski has made no secret of his distaste for the practical American casserole. The crunchy topped, condensed soupy, cheesy starched, canned protein casserole. For the most part I'm with him, except I love the funeral potatoes.

I'd be interested in hearing all the bad casseroles you've experienced, made, had or hid in a napkin. I'll start. Some time ago we were served a spaghetti casserole by a ward member. The base was plain spaghetti with corn and green beans mixed in. Topped with cottage cheese, Ragu, and Kraft Parm. Mmmmm....

A dietary staple in the beelze-household was Tater-Tot casserole. Ground beef, cream of mushroom, peas, topped with Tater Tots. 15 years and I still can't shake the memory.

While reading this will be irresistible, much like watching the remnants of a car wreck as you pass by on the freeway, decorum and conscience required me to rate this a 1-star thread. This topic is terrifying.

Thus far, we are 2 of 2 for nastiness.

Some casseroles are awesome. My old singles branch pres's wife makes one with wild rice, fresh broccoli, chicken, cheese and I love it. My mom makes one with chicken, zucchini, fresh mozz, and tomato sauce with fresh parm and it rocks. Also funeral potatoes are the bomb. Love 'em.

But that casserole you had YOhio, sounds sickening.

As God is my witness, I almost threw up reading that last paragraph. Oh my.

              Yeah, funeral potatoes are fine.

Some friends of ours had an old cookbook from the 50's. It featured nothing but casseroles. There was one in there (I am not making this up) called "Weenie Surprise". It consisted of sliced hot dogs, pork and beans, two cups of ketchup, and sugar.

Dang. How could I have forgotten? Weiner Bean Pot. When my parents updated to the Better Homes & Gardens New Cookbook, they made sure to transfer that page from the old version so the recipe would not be lost. Hot dogs, pork & beans, package of leek soup mix, ketchup & mustard. Not going to lie. I didn't hate it.

(Bless her heart, a friend's mom who ran a successful catering company treated me like I'd never learned to cook and taught me a few things so I need not be ashamed to invite people over.)

EDIT: I was typing this when Lebowski posted his Surprise, or I wouldn't have posted a duplicate.

I think SU posted that as a joke. Remember when you prepared a SPAM casserole from a gmail recipe and your husband liked it better than your normal cooking?

When my mom died when I was a kid, our house was swarmed with concerned Relief Society sister who were afraid that my brother and I would starve because my dad can't cook. We also received many, many meals (for which we were grateful, don't get me wrong).

However, at one point we had four chicken casseroles in our fridge. Dad forgot about one in the oven and left it there for a couple of days and it reeked to high heaven. My younger brother and I of course didn't like the casseroles, so my dad would fix us spaghetti and try to plow through them himself.

I'll admit to not having much taste when it comes to food. I'll eat about anything - and there are a lot of casserole's that I like. For instance, my Mom made a tatter tot casserole just a little different from the one described in this thread that I STILL like and eat.

But there was one given to us when one of our kids was born that was just the epitome of nastiness in my book. It was some kind of enchilada casserole, from what the folks said who gave it to us.

From what I could gather, it was hot dogs rolled up in corn tortillas with tomato soup spread over the top (mind you, not enough soup to actually make the thing moist - just enough to make it red) and a little cheese melted on top.

My mom used to make one with hamburger, cream of mushroom soup, green beans, corn, a package of onion soup mix, with instant mashed potatoes on top.

It smelled awful and tasted worse.

Weird. If you are going to go to the trouble of opening up a can of tomato soup, why not open up a can of enchilada sauce, instead? At least it would taste more like the intended flavor. I have no idea what to say about the hot dogs.

Canned salmon? You got canned salmon? I've only had canned tuna.
