The Su Casa menu looks pretty good and affordable, I will consider going to it tomorrow.

Sorry for not responding last night, I appreciate the feedback, I just went to bed and forgot about that thread earlier today. So not sure why it's that big of a deal. I haven't considered going to pizza pie since I heard from many people that it wasn't good at all. Not understanding the random hate here.

Also, here's a post on the Pizza Pie facebook: http://www.facebook.com/iloveppc/posts/297206493625432 looks like $5.99 (or $6.99 looks like that's a special).

If you are thinking of hitting up the Pie for pizza, be aware that that place is also terribly overrated.
Have you tried the Puntas de filete at R.I. It is served over Mole and pretty tasty.

Also, the Stuffed Pork Loin over the mole is pretty good.

I never get anything other than those two things or just mole. The guac is good and fresh.

I wouldn't call it "very overrated." It's a Mexican restaurant. It's not like anybody goes in their expecting it to be the Mexican version of El Bulli.

RE: Red/Blue Iguana - they used to be better before the owner/founder died (8-10 years ago?). Still they are decent. The Beto's/Molcasalsa places are just about on par with Iguana. I used to work near the Fairgrounds and would ahve the Beto's across the street from Red Iguana make me a custom (not on the menu) Chicken Fajita burrito that was to die for.

Su Casa, seriously? If that is great Mexican food, then any La Poo-Poo will do. Not bad if you like canned refried beans served on Lynn Wilson's tortillas under a melted mixture of American and crappy cheddar, served microwaved on heat lamp-hot plates. Note that when I lived in New England I would have KILLED to have a Mexican place as good as Su Casa - we didn't really have any options better than Taco Bell.

My favorite places probably aren't around any more. I always loved the greasy spoon places where the silverware didn't match and you really need to speak Spanish to order properly. La Frontera(?)* around 4th South and east of Redwood was one. Completely homemade food that always tasted yummy.

RE: The Pie - I really dug the scene when I was in High School, especially the dank basement atmosphere, live pseudo-jazz/blues/rock music, and sexual innuendo over the loudspeaker ("John, your 18-inch is up!"). They changed ownership in the early 90s and quality went downhill. Then it started getting better. When I was last there around 2000 it was again pretty good food, but quite expensive as mentioned.

All in all, I second the recommendation for Rio Grande Cafe. Say 'Hi' to all the Occupy Pioneer Park protesters.

**edit** Holy crap that was a mistake! I meant Sergio's Mexican. Skip Red Iguana and go to Sergios!

If that kick in the balls qualifies as amazing, you need to hit the taco truck downtown. It will blow your mind.

fwiw the Pulled Pork Salad thingie at Cafe Rio has ~1300 calories.

How affordable is the Rio Grande Cafe? I'm looking for something less than $14-15, not looking to be luxury spending.

You could definitely eat there for that. I usually get the pork carnitas, which is about $11-12.

Some things, pizza pie cafe and The Pie are not the same thing. One is really crappy pizza buffet, the other is a okay pizza joint that people remember being better than it is and costs quite a bit.

From your posts so far all of the recommendations given here will be fine.

I've never heard of The Pie, I just figured he meant it was The Pizza Pie (Buffet) for short.

Is everything on the menu generally above $10 at Rio Grande?

It is extremely overrated. It is routinely labeled the best Mexican restaurant in the state.

I haven't tried the puntas. Maybe I will give it a try.

How do you like their flour tortillas they bring you with your meal? Yum, no?

Pie Pizzeria. It is located right near the front of the U campus in a basement. It tastes delicious when you are in college. As a point of reference, taco bell and top ramen is also delicious in college.

That seems like a strong stance.

No. I would say $10 is about the average. There is a good selection for less than $10.

None yet. Any suggestions? Nothing I've eaten stands out. I'm sure there has to be a good dive somewhere, I haven't found it. And to my knowledge, there isn't a concept Mexican place in SLC either, so no nouveau Mexican for date night.

I've noticed you don't like criticism of Utah food. You were also offended about The average nature of Hires burgers. You probably think crown Burgers are delicious?
