I tried Mazza tonight. I got the kebab sandwich because I was hoping it was like a doner kebab. The lamb was great, but there was too much dill in the sandwich. Unfortunately, however, my search for a doner kebab continues. I'm going to go back though and try more of their food. Some of the dishes I saw while I was there looked great, and I want more of that lamb.

In Europe I fell for the falafels in pita bread with couscous, tomatoes and cucumber sauce. Mmm. Does Mazza have anything like that?

Now that I'm back in Salt Lake for the first time in 5 years, are there any other gems that have opened? Any taco shops remotely close to what is offered in SoCal? Some have said to try Betos.

They have the falafel, but they use tahini instead of tzaziki and they don't use couscous. You can make your own pretty easy though. Just find a falafel mix at Smith's or a specialty store. They're hit and miss, but sufficiently inexpensive that you can try a variety to see what you like. You can easily make tzaziki with Fage yogurt, garlic, dill and cucumber. Couscous is easy to find. The only challenge is finding good pita, but you can buy fresh pita from a store like Mazza or a local bakery. If you're in a pinch, then use store bought pita and warm it up on your oven burner.

It is "[sic] open 24 hour."

There was a joint called "Rubio's" on Bulldog and Freedom with good fish tacos for awhile (2002), but I think it went the way of all the earth.

Best tacos in Utah come from the taco carts.

There is still a Rubio's in SLC (7th S 4th E) celebrating Fish Taco Tuesdays.

There is a place near where Rockstar Balboa lives that actually has very good tacos. Corn tortillas, grilled jalapenos, cilantro, radish/carrot salad, etc.

The only knock is that they don't have horchata, pina, or the like.

But the tacos are good and worth the visit. I would recommend those if you are looking to feed your SoCal taco jones.

The Place TripleD is talking about is called LoneStar Taqueria...it's very good and authentic.

It's on Ft. Union BLVD....approx 7000 South on the left hand side just before you hit 2300 East. It's right after Whitmore Library.

                          Very good stuff.

Drove by that place plenty. Wish I would have tried it now.

They are definitely worthy of ingestion. Very impressed when I went and I have been back a couple of times since.

The next and final step that place needs to take is to price them like SoCal tacos.....$1 or less.

That is the great thing about driving home through East LA. For $5, you can gorge yourself with 4 or 5 fat tacos and wash them it down with a big pina or horchata.

One bit about Lone Star....they have other things on the menu and I cannot attest to these. I am talking strictly tacos...al pastor or asada. based on their asada, I would imagine that the burritos are nice, as well.

Next time you're out this way, I'll buy you lunch at a taco cart only a few blocks from where we had lunch. I like it, but would like to know how it stacks up to what you like about the LA tacos.
