  • Hot tamale

I would not call myself a 'foodie' (whatever that means), but I know what I like. The Spanish ward in our stake was doing a fund raiser for girls camp and were selling homemade tamales. As part of the deal they offered to deliver them while still hot. We ordered a bunch. Man were they good. Everything fresh, wrapped in corn husk. I don't usually like tamales but these were the best I have ever had.

SO, with all the bashing of Mormon culture and food going on, I am curious if anyone else has ever had something to eat through or related to a church function that was actually worthwhile.

I'll check the thread later and see if I am alon on this, but now I need to go pack a leftover tamale for lunch.
    PLesa excuse the tpyos.

When I lived in Memphis, the Spanish branch in put on a special culture night for the women in our ward. The food was fabulous and very authentic. Too many of the women missed out though because it didn't look like On the Border food so they wouldn't eat it.

Also, at an Enrichment in my current ward the woman in charge of the food was a convert from New York and a very good cook. She put on a fabulous meal (and I can't even remember what everything was called but it was good, pork loin, some kind of fancy rice dish, and some other side dishes). She spent a lot of her own money on it. Many of the women in the ward turned their noses up at it. They wouldn't even try it. I have a theory that most Mormon palates have been ruined by years of cheap casseroles. You know, growing up in a big family makes fine dining impractical.

What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

We had a cutural night here last year and it had some of the best Korean food and phillipino food I have ever had.

Additionally, we had a mexican sister who made awesome tortillas

        I love tamales. Delish.

I do remember going to the farewell of my wife's cousin in Blackfoot. I guess it is customary (or at least not uncommon) to have a "potatoe" bar. The toppings were good, but the spuds were massive. I loved that. One potato was a meal unto itself.

Generally, I find that large group functions, Church or otherwise, are not great places to go to find really good food. When you cook for 100+ people, you are usually making casseroles, big crock pots of chili, stuff like that, and not always very well-done. Most casseroles start tasting the same to me....cream of chicken base, sour cream and chicken, topped with cheese or whatever else. Gets old after awhile.

This is a great idea. I am going to suggest it in my ward, seriously.

We have a Chinese family that puts on a ward activity every 4th of July. We are often in Utah on the 4th, but stay home every now and then. When we have attended their bash, they put on a great spread of authentic Chinese stuff. Most of it, I have no idea what it is, but it tastes very good.

The youth in my in-laws ward sell Liguori's pizzas twice a year. Always good eats.

One of the few things I miss about living in Denver is the tamale places. Well and the Mexican food in general.

We've recently stumbled upon a woman who cooks at one of the local restaurants and is willing to make a few bulk Mexican dishes for us. I'll have to see if she does tamales.

I get it. So is the "thing" in question your experience with Mexican food?

Or am I being skewered for improper subject verb agreement?

If so just consider it another example of that wonderful rural NorWY patois that is my stock in trade.

There is really is not such thing as good Filipino food. There are some decent dishes. I make a really good Filipino BBQ, but it is not very Filipino. Think about it. How many Filipino restaurants do you see around? How many Chinese? Thai? Japanese? Even Vietnamese? There is a reason you don't see many Filipino. It's just the worst of the Asian foods.
