In a not so related story, my great grandmother from Hawaii used to send me and my siblings each our own package of Oreos at Christmas. I think she thought they were some Hawaiian delicacy. None of us had the heart to tell her you could buy them on the mainland.

My mom still acts like that. Not with Oreos, but with Hawaiian food items. She always asks if I want her to bring stuff back, and I just tell her I can get it at the grocery store.

Bingo. Plus diamond soda crackers, mauna pua, lau lau, miso peanuts, mochi, etc. Yet my mom is always calling me asking if I need stuff from Hawai'i.

I've also got Kauai Family Restaurant a few minutes from my house, and that place makes the best Guava chiffon cake I've ever tasted. Haupia needs some work, however.

Uwajimaya is awesome. You can buy good kine saimin there. There was an Uwajimaya in Portland that we used to frequent when my family lived there and a good Hawaiian restaurant called Noho's we used to eat at as well.

Yeah, they have S&S saimin. And Samurai Noodle is attached to the food court. I just filled up my card and get a free bowl of saimin! Woohoo!

I've always loved the thin mints.

The Samoas are very good too. I could eat both by the boxes.

do-si-dos, the peanut butter middle with the oat cookie... that's the best of the whole bunch!
