We had a friend in town staying in Arlington so we tried Metro 29 of Diner, Drive-In's and Dives fame. It was decent diner fare. Their dessert case looked amazing, but we passed to head across the river to visit DC Cupcake's home because 4 girls outnumbered my lone male vote. It's a bit overrated. But some of them were delightful. I ate too much last night. My stomach hurts as much as my wallet now.
Hibiscus Mango tastes a lot more like grandma's parfum than mango. Boo.
Mocha was awesome. However, don't eat the chocolate covered coffee bean on top.
Coconut was okay. I would have preferred the cupcake be more coconutty. Really it seemed like the coconut shavings on top was all that was coconut about it.
German Chocolate Cake was the bomb diggity. Caramel injected caked. Coconut, pecans, caramel and chocolate on top. Super decadent and rich.
Maple was good also. Tasted a bit like breakfast and a good maple bar.
Salted Caramel. I really liked this one too. It was like a snickers bar without the nuts and nougat on a cake.
We waited in line about 10 minutes or so. They only let a handful of folks into the store at once. I don't know how all the Duggars fit in there. We were told that the cupcake store Baked and Wired around the corner was far better but they had closed right before we arrived.
I made a lemon custard cupcake for all the mothers in the ward on Sunday that is a supposed DC cupcakes recipe. I think they were on par, though the buttercream frosting we made wasn't as stiff or light as theirs. Once that gets worked out I think it'd be just as good.
