My firebrick layout. Getting ready to fire it up.

My traeger is burning pellets like crazy right now, even with the bricks!

So my grill is running way too hot. I have it set at 225 but it was reading 265 so I waited for it to stabilize before putting the meat on. Now it has gone up as far as 284 and now back down to 260. I have it set at P-2 and I have the firebricks in as shown. What should I do? Adjust Psetting up or down?

EDIT: It seems to be large temp swings. It eventually did settle down right at 225-230 so I put the meat on. Temps quickly dropped as low as 175 with the lid open and now it jumped back up to 260 as the heat builds again. I'll watch it for a while to see if it is going to drop back to 225.

Up. Put it at p3 and see if that helps.

So their is an outlet type place in Orem, The Liquidation team. They have these pellets,

33 pounds for $9! I picked up 3 bags. They had two left...while I don't use hickory a ton, should be a good general source of heat and 99lbs for $27 was a deal I couldn't pass up on.

I may also have a line on cheap pellets. Friday night when I still thought I was taking my RV down to the game I stopped at Sportsman's Warehouse to get some apple pellets. Walking across the parking lot with a couple bags over my shoulder, I got stopped by another customer - he wanted to talk about Traegers and smoking.

He says that he buys his pellets in bulk from the company that used to supply Traeger before their last ownership change (I don't recall the name of the company he said). Anyway, they still produce a 5-wood blend of Hickory, Mesquite, Alder, Cherry, and Apple. He buys several hundred pounds at a time, and he says last time he bought his price was $6.33/bag. He says he does this just to keep himself and his sons in pellets, and that he sells the rest of each shipment at $6.50/bag.

He gave me his card, and when I next need pellets I'm going to give him a call and try them out.

I'm taking suggestions on my next attempt. I'm going to contribute something to a Notre Dame watch party on Saturday. I've done ribs, peppers, and pulled pork so far, and I'm not sure I'm ready to try brisket yet. I could do tri-tip but I frequently do that for these get-togethers so maybe something different?

I noticed this device in the store yesterday, while picking up a second cord for my phone. I'm not going to pay $70 for another thermometer, but curious if anyone uses one that syncs to their phone or ipad?

I use it. It syncs pretty well but the range is limited to about 40-50 feet. The temperature seems to read correctly when I compare it to a therma-pen.

Here is something for all you tailgaters!

It is small. Only a 13x13 grill area, but should be adequate for a pork butt, ribs, or tri-tips. Also runs off an invertor.

KCC is now trying to justify purchasing ANOTHER Traeger for his tailgating needs!

Yes, crapped on the idea of using something that small as a home smoker. For a tailgate or camping smoker, its great!
