Long story short- firebricks are well worth the investment.
Post your technique in the salmon thread, slacker.

Alright. I pulled the traeger. Looking forward to an exciting and flavor-filled food future. We're heading to Montana this week so I've got time to catch up on all the tips and begin smoking next week.

Which model did you get? And this goes to all you smokers: what size smoker do you have? I've showed a lot of the pics from these threads to my wife, and now she's itching for me to get one.

My neighbor has a Lil Tex smoker and says it's plenty big, but in talking with him, he seems to have no idea how to use it, at least comparing his technique with what I've read here.

We have family dinners fairly frequently, where some of our married kids come over for dinner, and we generally have 8 adults and occasionally 10 or 12. But I'd also like to be able to use it when it's just my wife and me. Will the Lil Tex be sufficient, or do I need to consider something bigger?

I personally think the lil Texas is too small. The Texas is large enough most days, but there are times I wish I had two.

Texas is a champ, mod it with a second shelf for those gluttonous summer days.

              Skip the Lil Tex.

I concur. Go with the Texas.

Sad Day in the DT household. I am down to one smoker. I did what I thought I would never do. I sold my WSM and my Big Green Egg. Since I bought the Yoder back in February, I haven't touched the Egg so I knew it was time. I am happy to be downsizing but a bit sad nonetheless. On the bright side, I sold them both for exactly what I paid for them so no real monetary loss.

Farewell you two, I hope your new owners treat you well....we had some great times and you wont soon be forgotten

I still have my Stoker, but nothing to use them with except monitor the temps on the Yoder.

I'll be joining the gang shortly with a WSM. I thought long an hard about a pellet grill but in the end decided I didn't mind getting my hands dirty on my first one.

They are great smokers! I'm sure you'll love it. 18.5" or 22.5"? I'd get the 22.5 if at all possible. It has much more room.

I got the 18.5. I figured most of the time I'd be smoking for 2-4 people. If it turns out I need more room it will give me a good excuse to upgrade.

Back from Kalispell late last night. Picked up the Traeger at Costco today - they held it for me for a week. I went with the elite - Mrs. h liked the look better. I still need to pick up some additional things - thermometer, fire bricks, etc. - but I should be good to go by this weekend.

I need some quick advice. How does your Traeger do in cold weather? I'm talking typical Utah winter, not Alaska.

I can get a Texas from a dealer for $1049 tomorrow. If it can smoke/grill decently in a New Mexican winter, I'll probably get it.

                              A thermometer
                              Thermapen
