  • Ike's Vietnamese Fish Sauce Wings

While we were in Portland, I went to Pok Pok and had the Ike's Vietnamese Fish Sauce Wings. This may very well be one of the best dishes that I have ever had in a restaurant. This includes anything that I had at the Beast (at a substantially lower cost). I can see why Food and Wine named them one of the 10 best restaurant dishes in 2007. They are simply amazing. I particularly enjoyed them after I ordered them extra spicy.

If you are every in Portland go to this place, get the wings, and a drinking vinegar to go with it. The other food I had there was good including the game hens, but it didn't compare to these wings. I was very excited when I found the recipe online. I'm actually going to give these a try without frying them and just grilling the wings. It won't quite be the same but it may be a reasonable approximation.

Cool. Be sure to let us know how they turn out.

I guess they drink them a lot in Japan. It is basically various fruit vinegars mixed with soda water. It has a nice tart taste to it with just a little bit of sweet. The vinegar taste is fairly subtle. They had a seasonal house made flavor with some odd fruit that I've never heard of. It really was one of the best drinks that I've had. It was a really nice complement to the wings. I just found out too that the owner also has a place right by Pok Pok that also serves appetizers (including the wings) and vinegars and it is open until midnight on weekdays and 1 am on weekends. If I get back to Portland these things are going to be a problem.

Those wings must be dusted with cocaine because it's only been four days since I ate them last and I'm dying here.

I just saw these wings on a re-run of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. I have to admit that when I first read this thread I thought they sounded disgusting (I once had a bad fish sauce incident in my pantry that has scarred me). But after watching them make the dish I would consider flying to Oregon just to try them. They start making the wings around 4:40 in the youtube clip.

Mrs. Funk and I are currently discussing the merits of leaving right now to drive up to Portland for the weekend to eat at Pok Pok again, among other things. It will be 24 hours of driving for 24 hours in Portland and neither of us are convinced that it is a bad idea.

Portland is a cool city. I could never live there, but it's nice to visit.

Which is funny, because I spend every day trying to figure out ways to move back.

And am very seriously considering packing up and booking it over there tonight. Gotta be wild and crazy before kids make us immobile!

Careful. It can get dangerous through the Blue Mountains, especially at night.

I did that drive pretty often as my parents lived in Portland for a bit before my mission. And of course when I was dating Gidget.

You're right. And it's been a week of sleep deprivation.

But at any rate, the fish sauce wings are amazing. Just awesome eats.

So we had a pilgrimage back to Portland and ate more of the wings. We also came home with a bottle of Som. It is the concentrate for making drinking vinegars. It is great stuff and well worth picking up. Of the flavors they had available, we went with the pomegranate which is really good.

In the restaurant, I had a meyer lemon vinegar which is the best one that I've had so far. Mrs. Funk had a celery/strawberry vinegar that they recommended. It really is great stuff.

I highly recommend when they are available for purchase on the website to pick one up. Mark Grace you definitely owe it to yourself to make a trip to Pok Pok next time you are in Portland.

We might be heading down to PDX soon. We'll likely check out Pok Pok.
