I mean, I bought three half gallons of Blue Bell this morning for $5.95 a piece (homemade vanilla, choc chip cookie dough and moolenium crunch)

Lol. Great story about your grandpa LS but consensus is that his ice cream wasn’t as good as the store bought premium stuff.

I think you are the one that turned me on to Kroger Private Selection ice cream. That stuff is great.

Because I prefer great ice cream, apparently.

Blue Bell is awesome. I wish it were still sold in LV. Fricken listeria.

The kids love making homemade ice cream, so I enjoy making it with them. In my very limited experience, most fruit flavored home made ice cream gets ice crystals the worst. I made strawberry ice cream last week that called for the strawberries to macerate for a couple of hours and then add during the last 5 minutes. But it's too much water content. The only fruit based ice cream I can get to stay creamy is banana.

Mostly I just make a vanilla base the day before snd chill it overnight. Added flavoring must be low moisture. We mostly use candy bar bits or Oreos. For Christmas we add crushed candy cane and Oreos.

The recipe I followed yesterday for strawberry called for one less cup milk than the normal base, which I assume was to compensate for the extra amount of H2O in the fruit. The strawberry mixture was added to the custard base while warm, then chilled overnight together, so it was all relative close to freezing point, which I guess is the secret to avoiding ice crystals. Results were good.

I, for one, appreciate LS's sincere and passionate defense of homemade ice cream. I may not fully agree with him, but I respect his conviction.

I'll post updates after our next batch--which I promised to my middle daughter would be Nutella.

Thanks for the reminder, LS. We haven’t done this with the kids in years and happen to have some leftover cream in the refrigerator. It may be a homemade ice cream weekend in the Public household.

Homemade ice cream can be much better than store bought but it’s expensive. It’s fun to do for special occasions but it’s not quick and simple. I’ve got a great ice cream freezer that was in the $200 range. I use recipes from David Lebovitz Perfect Scoop. Toasted Coconut with homemade Dulce de Leches is my personal favorite. Lots of great recipes and the texture comes out as smooth and creamy as any premium store bought ice cream. It just costs about 5x and is a lot of time and effort.

We made the “decadent chocolate ice cream” from our machine’s instruction booklet:

                              https://www.cuisinart.com/globalasse...-maker/ice-202

It turned out great, and the kids were excited and engaged. We whipped the remaining cream for a topping. Smiles all around.

                                I love homemade ice cream.

I also love store bought ice cream.

They are different than each other. I'm not sure one is demonstrably better than the other. Just different - and both good.

                                All ice cream matters!
