The homemade ice cream thread

So what I'd really like to see is a recipe for a really good "base" ice cream -- vanilla or cream. From there, I can piddle with other add-ins.

If I remove the malt powder and milk balls -- will I have an awesome base ice cream?

Only way to find out is to try.

Bumped. It's summertime, and we need to get serious about homemade ice cream. This Saturday my family and I are starting a two-week vacation at the beach. We'll be renting a house there and I want to make ice cream. I will try the stawberry and the banana recipes below, but want some others. Any suggestions?

I'm going to have you over for some of the squid gut ice cream. It should look really great on you. Do you want to wear it on your head, or somewhere else?

After Finderson suggested banana icecream, we tried one adn it was great.

Banana Ice Cream
2 cups half and half
1 cup cream
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 tsp vanillla
mix all and chill well
freeze according to maker instructions
add 2 ripe bananas smashed with 1 tsp lemon juice when almost completely frozen.

you can use the same recipe with 1 cup smashed strwberries and the lemonjuice. This make a nice strawberries nad cream icecream.

We tried this tonight with the strawberry option. It was a great success. Terrific home-made ice cream, and lots of fun for the chilluns.

What stage of ripeness is best for the bananas? A banana's flavor and texture changes dramatically in a 3 day period or so.

These are banana bread ripe. Ones that no one in my house would eat.

In my house, any ice cream that lasts an entire week is, by definition, a failure.

I didn't tell the kids about it and it has been only filling half the bowl as the homemade strawberry goes in the other half.

My mom has an amazing apricot ice cream recipe. I'll dig it up next time i'm over there. It usually tastes better the next day for some reason. We have never had the problem of it being rock hard. Its obviously harder the day after than when its right out of the ice cream maker, but not much harder than store bought ice cream. Also we bought a small machine last year that only fits about half the recipe. We refrigerate the other half and use it later in the week. Not much as far as leftovers that way.
