This tread really tests my resolve

I may be small, but I'm slow.

My wife doesn't even like sugar cookies and she's digging them. The lemon juice is key. She's quit teasing me about my "internet friends" and now wishes she had some connections to awesome recipes. I told her she could sign up, but we'll see . . . I'm worried our household would grind to an absolute stop if that were the case.

Again, kudos to you and your recipe, Duderino.

In the spirit of HFN, here are a couple of photos, although they're more of my kid than of the cookies:

That's right. We go topless when we make cookies at my house.
Great pics Solon. You little girl is a cutie.

Here you go. It makes a huge batch, so be warned.

        Grandma Taylor's Sugar Cookies

        4 eggs
        2 Cups shortening
        4 Cups sugar
        2 Cups buttermilk
        1 tsp. vanilla
        1 tsp. lemon extract
        2 tsp. baking soda
        1 tsp. salt
Enough flour to make a soft dough. About 9 cups

Cream eggs, shortening and sugar. Add buttermilk, vanilla and lemon, blend until creamy. Slowly add the dry ingredients. The dough will be very soft. Roll out on a lightly floured surface. Bake at 350 for about 8-10 minutes. I like a softer cookie so I reduce the heat to about 325 and bake until the cookies spring back. This is a big recipe that makes dozens of sugar cookies. My grandma had 15 children and so she had to cook for an army. These cookies freeze well or you can half the recipe.

This is a very old recipe. My grandma was one of those good cooks who didn't measure things and it turned out perfect every time. I am not that good, so I measure my flour. I also like to crush up peppermints and mix them into the dough. It makes it a chewy cookie and gives it a good flavor.
        Cookie Report:

        Jeff,

Faith made about three batches of these cookies for a Dia de los Muertos family festival at Jefferson High School. By the time she was done, she had two brown paper shopping bags full of cookies, all the way to the top. They were cut into the shape of calaveras (skulls), and the families decorated them in the customary fashion, with frosting and candies. It was a huge hit, and only one small freezer bag full of cookies returned home. I am now enjoying the remainders, sans frosting, with my coffee. They are everything that you promised and more.

That is awesome. Thanks for that kind note.

We made a big batch on Sunday night. I ate way too many.

I had been waiting for a long time to make these, and it seemed like something always got in the way, kids sick, me sick, out of town. Finally today I said no more waiting and Captain and I got to work.

½ C butter (do not use margarine!!)
            1 C shortening
            2 eggs
            ½ C molasses (Granny’s is a good brand)
            4 C flour
            3 t baking soda
            1 ½ t cinnamon
            1 t salt
            1 t ginger

Cream the sugar, butter and shortening. Add remaining ingredients and beat together. Roll into small balls and roll in sugar.
Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 350 degrees. How long you cook it depends on your preference. We like them crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. To do this, you need to take them out while they are still quite soft and let them sit a minute before you take them off the sheet. Experiment to find what you like. We generally cook for 8-10 minutes in a convection oven.

Cap was so excited about the molasses, he kept asking when he could taste it. I told him I didn't think he would like it but he insisted, and I was right. Luckily I trained him well enough so that he did go to the garbage can to try and spit the taste out.

Keeping the dough ball to a smaller size is important. On the first batch I wanted to make them bigger but they did not turn out as well.

Great recipe Duderino, we doubled it so we will be giving these to our neighbors for a Christmas gift.

Whoa. That photo is making me hungry.

              Glad you liked them.

I love cookie time with HFN. One question: why is it always Captain that serves as your apprentice?

Those are the best!! Highly effective for those that voted "yes" in my poll the other day.

They're equally effective for those that voted no and abstained. You use them to measure semi-solid ingredients like peanut butter or crisco. You can get them from Pampered Chef.

Yeah, but what do you have to measure solid to VERY solid? That's when the measurement really counts anyway.

He's the only one that really likes to. I ask if people want to make cookies and he runs and gets his apron. I have to force HFN Jr. to participate, so most of the time I don't force him. He enjoys eating the cookies however.

You know, in the picture above, it looks like YOU are the one that's being forced.

did you go convection oven? how many mins did you bake?

I have made these cookies twice now and both times they were an unmitigated success. my MIL asked where i got the recipe and without hesitation, I said, "Jeff Lebowksi." She has no idea what that is, so she simply said something like, "well these are really good cookies!"
