I think Strat has adapted pretty well. If you play the more advanced versions it is a pretty realistic simulation. I do wish I had a PS3 to play MLB09.

          • My family likes board games. My parents liked to have FHE's where the activity was some type of word game, like Scrabble or Boggle. They felt it was a great way to secretly prepare us for the SAT.

After I got back from my mission, in those interim few months before Fall Semester rolled around, my younger brother and I got hooked on online Boggle. One day, I challenged my parents to a boardgame match. The result was glorious. The final score for the first round was something like: Children (average score) - 70, Parents - 2. Absolute destruction. We played a second round where my parents merged their word lists. Children (average score) 77, Parents (combined score) - 7. My parents have never played Boggle with us again. What sweet redemption/revenge for all those years of "constructive" word games.

They don't play scrabble with my brother and I either.

One game we still play together is Set:

From boardgamegeek here is the description:

Each card contains 1-3 matching objects, in one of three colors, shapes, and shadings. Twelve cards are laid out, and the first person to spot a set of three collects those cards. The cards are replaced from the deck and play continues.

A set consists of three cards that are either all alike or all different in each attribute: for instance, if all three cards have the same number of objects, but different shapes, shadings, and colors, then they're a set. If two of the cards have a common attribute that is not shared by the third, they are not a set.

            1991 Mensa Select

Basically, it's a pattern recognition game. My brain always has to get warmed up to the game, but once we all get going, it's extremely fast paced, with people yelling "SET" and madly grabbing sets (3 cards with the same attributes). We like to play this occasionally at family gatherings. I don't know if it helps train my brain for anything other than recognizing squiggly patterns and colors, but it makes me feel like I'm getting smart or something.

              • This has been my favorite game for the last 25 years, though I'm pretty certain the last time I played, Tim destroyed me. No, hermano? My problem now is, no one will play me at it, and Tim's halfway around the world.

                • I also enjoy these games:

Also, Scrabble is great, even though I usually lose. When we lived in New Orleans, no one would let Mrs. wuapinmon and I be on the same team when we played Cranium because we are that N*Synch.

I am terrible at card games, and if you ever want to win some money, just challenge me to some Texas Hold 'Em.

We need to play Memoir 44 some time. I play this with Britton and he loves it.

                      • So I picked up this game a few weeks ago and it has quickly become my favorite game. It took some swallowing of pride to get over the medieval theme of the game, but I'm glad that I did. It is a great game. Games are quick, only about 30 minutes, and there is lots of strategy involved. However, despite the strategy the game is really easy to grasp. There is also a lot of variety in the game. You have a total of 25 different types of cards and you only use 10 per game, allowing several different combos. The game can be played more cutthroat with some of the attack cards in play or a little more laid back. I personally enjoy the more laid back game and haven't played with the more nasty attack cards. There is an expansion out that operates also as a standalone game, but I see no reason to get the expansion.

I picked up Puerto Rico yesterday and hope to try it for the first time this week. I also rented Power Grid and am planning on trying it this week as well.

I always liked "Blitzkrieg" from Avalon Hill. Although not specifically a WWII game, I understand it is based on it.

I may be small, but I'm slow.

Interesting. The picture of your game didn't show up, but from you description it sounds like you were playing Dominion. We have been playing quite a bit of Dominion lately with our board game friends. Dominion recently won the presitgious Spiel des Jahres award for Best Game of 2009. It is a great game.

Puerto Rico is a fantastic game and Power Grid is also a classic. Sounds like you have some fun gaming ahead!

It has been years since I have played this game, but A&A probably took up more of my high school life than video games and make out sessions combined (not that I was deprived in either of those categories). I play a killer Japan, which I think has the most interesting gameplay options in that game. The US takes too long to get into the action. Russia ends up stockpiling military to ward off Germany. Germany has interesting early options, but quickly overextends itself. Plus, the success or failure of Germany in the early game depends too much on lucky dice rolls, which is never too fun (if the dice don't roll in your favor). Britain's role in the game seems to be to control Germany's navy and to conduct air raids on German industrial buildings. Not that exciting, and again, a few unlucky rolls will bring down GB's airforce, and it usually too expensive to rebuild very quickly.

A&A is fun, but it has some serious flaws as a game (some listed above). One major flaw is that it takes WAY too long to play for anyone but teenagers with a lot of time to kill. Also the whole industrial development gambling aspect is ridiculous. It costs too much to do very often, but a couple of lucky rolls will destroy the balance of the game (heavy bombers).

                              • For scrabble fans, my MIL introduced us to some game called bananagrams. It had all these scrabble tiles and the overall feel to it was a "speed scrabble." I have zero idea why the game is called "bananagrams," other than that the tiles come in a cartoonish felt bag with a pic of a banana on it.
