Buy 7 Wonders on Amazon, it is a lot cheaper. $36.00 seemed a lot more reasonable for the game than $50. Also, if you are driving up from Southern Utah, stop at Board Game Revolution instead. The games are a lot cheaper.

Also, for the boardgame fans. Keith Law actually does a lot of boardgame reviews on his blog.

Is Battle Line the one that uses the same mechanic as Memoir '44? Or am I thinking of something else? I have Memoir and enjoy it a lot, and it was easy for my son and his friends to pick up.

I don't own 7 Wonders but have played it several times with a friend. I would say that it may look fussy on first inspection, but is actually quite easy both to teach and to play. It's a good balance of theme, tactics, not much luck involved, and plays in 45 minutes. It is a very solid and enjoyable game.

    • I've played 7 Wonders many times with my group, and we love it. It is one of Little Robin's favorites. I just happened to be looking at it on Amazon today and noticed that there is a new expansion for the game, so I just might have to plunk down and pick up the two. I think that card protectors are a must, with all of the card passing, they get handled a lot, and will probably rot/bend without them. What I like about 7 Wonders: Everyone is doing stuff at the same time, so it isn't boring while you wait for your turn. It is pretty short to play. It is fairly newb-friendly. The graphics are great, and it kind of tickles my Civ IV/V sweet spot.

Faith and I love Lost Cities, so I will definitely look into Battle Line. Thanks for the tip!

I think you're thinking Battle Cry.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Oh, right. I'll have to check out Battle Line.

          • We played the game Resistance tonight. Very similar to the party game Mafia, but a bit more codified and more structured. I liked it a lot.

            • Picked up the 7 Wonders Leaders expansion, and it adds a fun dimension to the game, and a lot of new strategic ways to win. This is a good buy for 7 Wonders fans.

Also picked up Ticket to Ride for the iPad. It is a perfect port, and fun for solo-play. I think it has probably ruined the board game for me, since it plays so quickly with the computer managing all of the cards and shuffling.

              • Well we are coming close to the holidays, which means time for at least one new board game. In an effort to start some actual family traditions last year, we decided that each Christmas we will buy a new boardgame and play it on Christmas day. Nothing is really catching my eye as a potential new game, so if anyone has any ideas, I would love some suggestions. Dominant Species looks good, but the price is a little high for my tastes.

If you don't have it already, or it hasn't already been mentioned here, I highly recommend Settlers of Catan. It's great for 2-6 people (with the expansion) and takes only about an hour to play a complete game, which is perfect for entertaining.

Yeah, funk, try that one! It's a bit hard to find, but great game!

I bought this on the ipad and have put in a bunch of games, solo and with my son. This is now one of my favorites. It's simple, but deceptively deep.

It is a really fun game and the physical version is nice and compact.

mp did we already mention 7 Wonders in this thread? I can't recall if you've tried it or not. If not, that would get my recommendation. Another one you may have tried already as it's been around a few years is Caylus, I finally got to play it and liked it.

A favorite card game for my friends and I is Fluxx. The game is very entertaining and os fun over a few drinks with good conversation. For best results the drinks should contain alcohol.

I do have 7 Wonders. It is a great game and a really good gateway game. It also scales really nicely for larger groups of players. We played with a group of friends that don't play boardgames much with 6 players and it worked out really well.

The only thing holding me back with Caylus is complexity. I would probably like it, but the wife may not. I've heard that Caylus really can be brutal.

Ahem. He makes me sound a simpleton. The criticism I've heard of Caylus is that it's cutthroat. Of course, some people really enjoy the game for this reason. I'm all about peace and love, dude.
