The only place that k/d is directly relevant is team deathmatch, and even then it's misleading. Who do you want on your team: the guy who goes 13-3 or the one who goes 26-18. It's not an easy call. The guy who goes 27-1 is optimal, of course.
In all other game types k/d has a tangential effect at best. The other day in a kill confirmed match a dude on my team went 14-35. He also had the highest score in the game by almost double anybody else.
