Saw this last night. Very solid but not spectacular. The documentary/mockumentary style of the movie was pretty cool. It was obvious at the end of the movie that they're going to make a sequal and the money the movie has made so far certainly won't hold it back. This movie only cost $30 million to make and will, I estimate, end up making around $300 million worldwide.

Interesting fact: The lead actor who played Wikus Van de Merwe adlibbed most of the dialogue in the documentary being filmed at the beginning of the movie.
The creatures used in the small fighting arena were meant to be rodents/pests which were aboard the ship -
One thing I liked about the film is that, almost unique among the big summer offerings, it was an original concept. And the fact that people are pumped about it and making it successful is exciting. With the exception of some comedies, almost every wide release this summer has been a sequel in a successful franchise, a reboot of a successful franchise, a movie based on a cartoon/toy line or a sequel to a movie based on a cartoon/toy line. Man.
The dearth of original ideas in the summer blockbuster season is disheartening. So it's impressive when something like DISTRICT 9, which I liked quite a bit, comes along and gets people talking. The fact that it's a pretty original story with a unique directorial vision is a bonus.Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

I wanted to see this last night but, due to the ravages of age, became confused and went instead [I am not making this up] to see Plan 9 From Outer Space, with live commentary provided by the MST3000 crew, and preceded by a hilarious short about stewardess training in the '30s.
Back to District 9, our son saw it and now insists that will be our FHE activity Monday. We just don't see enough South African science fiction movies, so I think we'll do that.Comment

I concur. AFter a while I found myself ignoreing it, like it was an anoying verbal tic or bad habit or somethign. But it never seemed ot be too offesnive. My wife disliekd it, however.
