  • Guitar lovers: who has your favorite tone?

My ears love Billy Gibbons. Some of my favorite songs are:

    I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide
    Waitin' for the Bus
    La Grange
    Tush
    Arrested for Driving While Blind
    Cheap Sunglasses

I take Gibbons, his Les Paul, and a peso for a pic over some over-processed shredder like Vai any day. Even ZZ Top's synth albums have better tone than anything that has ever come out of Oklahoma.

    Go Cougars.
We all trust our own unorthodoxies.

    Jonny Greenwood
    David Gilmour

Not sure how much of a "guitar lover" I am, however.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I don't know that I have a favorite, because I like a lot of different guitarists of varying quality, from Clapton to Tom Petty to Stevie Ray Vaughn. Lately I've been listening to B.B. King.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

            Esteban.

Billy Corgan's tone throughout Siamese Dream, particularly "Hummer". The guitar tone on Weezer's blue album is beautiful. The Strokes' Is This It, Van Halen's 1984, and the brand new Kings of Leon has my attention with its guitar tone.

That was a sensational list...and then you had to throw VH in there!

Last year I was quite obsessed with the guitar tone on this Okkervil River song Blue Tulip.

Lately I have a fascination with the guitar sounds on Wilco's A Ghost Is Born - above all on the song At Least That's What You Said.

Brian Blush back when he was in the Refreshments. Very pure rock tone with a Tube Screamer slamming a Matchless Cheiftain.

Steve Larson of Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers.

Gilmour, Gibbons, Paisley, Urban, and Mayer all have great tone.

GIlmour is hard to beat; back in the day I really liked Terry Kath; GIbbons is great too.

George Lynch when he uses the modified Marshall 1959T and a vintage tube screamer
                          John Sykes
                          John Petrucci
                          Early EVH
SRV popped up on my iPod a couple days ago and I had forgotten how good he can sound

the one chance I've had to see B.B. in concert I came down with something and had to skip it. My brother ended up taking my ticket, which was good because he's a far better musician than I am and I think he came away with an improved perspective on blues music. He'd always been a ska/punk/reggae kind of guy.

oh forgot to mention-- I saw Sonic Youth a couple weeks ago and Thurston really has a mean tone live. He made quite a spectacle of himself and rocked a lot of people's socks off for a relatively aged dude.
