What app does your library use? OverDrive?Originally posted by LiveCoug View PostMy book consumption is about 95% audiobooks now. I drive a ton for work, so I can bust through books fast.
Also, I can't think of a good reason to pay for audiobooks or for an audiobooks service (audible or whatever). I can get pretty much any audiobook for free through my library app.
I take that back, I guess the one good reason for paying is getting the book you want right away, as sometimes I have to wait a bit to get a book through my library, but my wishlist and hold list is so huge, it doesn't matter. I always have plenty.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

all the good stuff has a long waitlist at our library. overdrive is a cool idea, but the whole idea of having digital content available to only one person at a time is super dumb.Originally posted by LiveCoug View PostMy book consumption is about 95% audiobooks now. Yup, that's the con. But like I said, I have such a huge list that I always have something good. The good ones I have to wait a while for will be there soon enough.Originally posted by old_gregg View Postall the good stuff has a long waitlist at our library. overdrive is a cool idea, but the whole idea of having digital content available to only one person at a time is super dumb.

Haven't looked at Overdrive in a while. Does it support audiobooks? Would hate to actually have to read a book myself.Originally posted by LiveCoug View PostYup, that's the con. I basically signed up for a library card for the first time in 10 years just to use this. All the newer books are on waitlist, but there is a huge list of "available now" ebooks and audiobooks that I've never read. I don't foresee a problem finding something good to read.Originally posted by LiveCoug View PostYup, that's the con. But like I said, I have such a huge list that I always have something good. I finally finished 'So Rugged and Mountainous: Blazing the Trails to Oregon and California, 1812–1848', by Will Bagley. It's his first in a planned series of 4 books about the westward migration of the US. There is a lot of fascinating history in it. If you are a history buff, I recommend it.
What I liked:
Many first-hand accounts of the first Oregon and California Trail pioneers. It was very vivid reading the details from their own words. It's evident that Bagley did a lot of research from journals.
Interesting cultural, geologic, anthropologic, etc. details that surrounded the blazing of the trails. I hadn't really heard of much of it before, and it was really interesting to tie it in with the actual people migration.
The writing itself. Bagley is a non-academic historian, and his writing style seemed unique. Kind of refreshing.
What I didn't like:
For a book that constantly referenced the geography of the trails, there are only a couple of maps in the whole book. I found myself turning back to map all the time to get my bearings. Each chapter should have included maps.
The flow of the book is uneven. Each chapter tried to focus on a general topic about the trails, and they weren't necessarily in chronological order. I understand he was trying to group related discussions together in separate chapters, but because of this he repeated quite a few stories. I understand what he was trying to do, but it doesn't read like a typical chronological history. It's not a deal breaker, but it took some getting used to.
I'm going to buy the next book in his series. It's about the California gold rush. It might take me a while to get through it..."...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

Just finished Red Notice by Bill Browder. Hard to review this without reverting to hyperbole. Fantastic book. First half is a thrilling story of how he built up a $6B investment fund from scratch primarily by finding opportunities in post-Soviet Russia. Found some buys that results in 1000x gains. Also had some huge losses. Second half of the book is a shocking story of murder, corruption, cover-up, etc. Story ends up involving the US house, senate, state dept. and presidency, not to mention the highest levels of the Russian government. Reinforces once again how utterly evil Putin is. Russia is a crazy place."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Meh...... his concluding acceptance of Nike hero Alberto Salazar's coaching and PED involvement with coached athletes reveal either a naiveté or tacit approval of such.
