I'm in the middle of two books that I'm really enjoying. The first is Doris Kearns Goodwin's The Bully Pulpit, which covers the lives of Teddy Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, along with the evolution of political journalism at the turn of the previous century. It's long but fascinating. I may end up enjoying this even more than Team of Rivals, which I liked a lot.
The second, very different, book is 10% Happier by ABC News correspondent and co-anchor Dan Harris. He writes about a meltdown on national TV and how that led him on a long path to meditation, which he once offhandedly commented had made him ten percent happier, hence the name. The book is a quick read and is great for skeptics like me who roll their eyes at a lot of the New Agey babble that usually pops up in conversations about mediation. I was hooked by the opening sentences in the preface:
A very instructive and enjoyable read.I initially wanted to call this book The Voice in My Head Is an Asshole. However, that title was deemed inappropriate for a man whose day job requires him to abide by FCC decency standards.
It’s true, though. The voice in my head can be a total pill. I’d venture to guess yours can, too. Most of us are so entranced by the nonstop conversation we’re having with ourselves that we aren’t even aware we have a voice in our head. I certainly wasn’t—at least not before I embarked on the weird little odyssey described in this book.Comment

Just started The Twelve by Justin Cronin. Sequel to The Passage which I read last year and enjoyed. Post-apocalyptic zombie vampire stuff. The second one is a little harder to get into for some reason.Comment
