It is interesting. All of my grandparent's children became republicans, which might have been their form of rebellion against their parents But both my mom and aunt (Fox News on the TV all the time) have only nice things to say about FDR.

      • Just finishing The Fireman by Joe Hill. Dystopian fiction that has so far been a really fun read. I can almost guarantee this will be a movie.

I have liked what I have read from Joe Hill. Really like NOS4A2, That was a fun listen. For those that don't know, he is Stephen King's son. Following in Dad's footsteps a little.

Uh, I am one of those who didn't know I was actually going to mention in that post that the guy looks exactly like a young Steven King. Now I know why.

            • Just finished The Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America. Winner of the 2013 Pulitzer for nonfiction.

              https://www.amazon.com/Devil-Grove-T...l+in+the+grove

Covers a history of Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP working on many cases in late 40's, early 50's, but primarily focuses on a case in Florida where four black men were falsely accused of raping a white woman. Many similarities to the story in To Kill A Mockingbird so I have to wonder if Harper Lee used it for inspiration. However, reality is more mind-blowing than fiction in this case. And Thurgood Marshall makes Atticus Finch look like a wanker. Fantastic book.

FTR, mid-20th century southern US was a rotten, evil place. Unreal.

                • I finished Girl on the Train. I liked it, but didn't love it. Tons of new books are trying to be compared to Gone Girl. That doesn't necessarily fit with this, but still a fairly interesting story that was worth the entertainment read for me.

I have a feeling that people have already commented on that, but it is a Sunday morning and that is entirely too much work to do a search on it. Sorry, not sorry.

                  • It's been awhile, but here a few that I've read recently

                    I just finished
                    India's War

                    https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...87-india-s-war

I thought it was a fascinating look at India's contributions to World War II. I felt it was fairly even handed. The author really didn't take a stand on the morality of the Raj. He interspaces chapters on the internal politics of India during the war with chaptera on combat operations by the Indian Army. One fact I didn't know - the Indian Army grew from less than 200K to more than 2.5 million men during the war - all volunteers.

For my anual trip to Cedar City, I read this newish book on supposedly the Globe Theater. The title is a misnomer. It's really a biography of Elizabeth Russell, the self-style dowager Countess of Bedford

Shakespeare and the Countess: The Battle that Gave Birth to the Globe

Another one on WWI - this could legitamitely be subtitled - Everything you wanted to know about the Imperial German Army, but were afraid to ask
The Kaiser's Army: The German Army in World War One

                    https://www.goodreads.com/review/sho...w_action=false

This was a really good look at Bradock's Defeat and how it affect the British and American attitudes towards fighting. Several important figures in the Americal Revolution fought there, not just Geo Washington

Braddock's Defeat: The Battle of the Monongahela and the Road to Revolution (Pivotal Moments in American History)

Never got around to typing up my thoughts, but an excellent and eye opening read.

For those of you who like William Shier book, I thought this one is excellent

WW II from the German view point

I may be small, but I'm slow.
