that is a pretty amazing recall. No way do I remember. I was in HS in 87 and I do recall in general that there were a few KROQ DJs that were really big Numanoids.....Richard Blade, Swedish Eagle, and of course Rodney Bingenheimer. While pretty much everyone spun Gary Numan stuff from Pleasure Principle and Replicas, these guys were pretty loyal and tried to introduce people to his then-current (albeit less popular stuff). I was too young to lay claim to Numan in his late 70s heydey, but I do recall my brother having a Gary Numan poster...the kind of androgenous one where he is pretending to drive a car...I believe it was the cover of the 12" single for Cars. I guess that was my first introduction to his music....via my older brother. By the time Radio Heart rolled around, I was in HS and knew Numan as the guy who did Cars and Are Friends Electric, stuff like that. So in that sense, I definitely remember his doing this side project and it being well-received.
For fans of pioneer synth-pop, it is amazing how well his old Tubeway Army stuff holds up, even to this day. And Pleasure Principle is required Synth 101 material for anyone that wants to learn more about the genre. Bands like Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, et al....they cut their teeth on Gary Numan records, and probably to a greater degree of influence than even Kraftwerk.
On a side note, it just dawned on me that The Futureheads may have received the inspiration for their song, "Radio Heart," from the Gary Numan side project. Maybe not, but it would not surprise me.

I was a soph in high school when Numan's Cars hit the airwaves. I thought it was one of the coolest things I'd ever heard and instantly became a fan. It had such a different sound that everyone liked it, no matter what their favorite genre was.
I haven't thought about Tubeway Army for years. Thanks for the reminder. I may have to break out my old vinyl stuff and listen to it on the turntable at my parents' home the next time I visit.
I'm not familiar with The Futurheads, but that was a good song.
