  • After the good reviews here, I decided to grab a ticket for tonight’s show with Nate Bargatze and some other guys. I haven’t been to a stand-up performance in probably a decade, and I’m looking forward to it.

      Awesome. Return and report!

      • Bargatze is great. I saw him last summer and the show was a hoot. Nicki Ovicki and Julian McCullough performed with him and they were also great. Awesome show all around.

Edit: I also saw Mark Pope at the show. He and his wife were both very nice.

Is that your way of saying their set sucked?

          • The show was awesome. I was at a conference for a couple of days, and we were less than a mile from the Hollywood Bowl where the show was, so I just walked up the hill. It was a beautiful May evening in the hills. The other comedians performing were Nicolas Maniscalco (sp?), Jim Gaffigan and Jerry Seinfeld.

They drew numbers out of a hat onstage at the beginning to determine the show order.
            1. Bargatze - Hilarious. The county fair bit was great. Some others in my row said they'd heard it before but that it was more polished and developed last night. He was my favorite of the evening.
            2. Maniscalco - Not my style, but the crowd was laughing and enjoying it. Obviously a popular, talented guy.
            3. Gaffigan - Really sharp, precise performance. He joked about being on Ozempic, marriage, kids, etc.
            4. Seinfeld - The only stand-up I'd ever seen from him before last night was the beginning and ending segments of the early episodes of his TV show. He must be pretty old now, but he looked great and was really funny. His voice still cracks and squeaks when he gets loud, just like on his TV show. He had some marriage material that was fantastic.

                  • I am going to make a pitch for this movie here and in the Netflix thread, so watch out.

I saw UNFROSTED on Netflix over the weekend. For those that don't know, it is Seinfeld's directorial debut. He also wrote and stars in it, but it really is a huge ensemble cast. I think the movie makes the most sense as a fully-fleshed out Seinfeld stage bit. I also think that Jerry probably allowed each of the main actors to develop their characters on their own and write some of their own jokes. The Jerry jokes are jerry jokes. The Gaffigan jokes are 100% Jim, etc.

If you like the stand-up/humor from Jerry, Gaffigan, Schumer, or Melissa McCarthy, I think you'll really like this movie. The list of cameos and bit parts played by people you know or recognize is pretty amazing:

                    Jerry
                    Gaffigan
                    McCarthy
                    Schumer
                    Hugh Grant
                    Kyle Mooney
                    Mikey Day
                    Max Greenfield
                    Cedric the Entertainer
                    Kyle Dunnigan
                    Sebastian Maniscalco
                    Beck Bennett
                    Adrian Martinez
                    Jack McBrayer
                    Thomas Lennon
                    Bobby Moynihan
                    James Marsden
                    Aparna Nancherla
                    Tony Hale
                    Peter Dinklage
                    Bill Burr
                    Ronny Chieng
                    Dean Norris
                    George Wallace
                    Jon Hamm
                    John Slattery
                    Fred Armisen
                    Darrell Hammond
                    Dan Levy

We watched the first half or so last night. I had low expectations due to the IMDB rating, but we are pleasantly surprised so far. That being said, if you weren't raised in the 60's and 70's you might miss a lot of the jokes.

That might be true, but it didn't seem to impact my enjoyment of the movie. I did feel, however, that this movie might be targeted at precisely my demographic (and 10 years on either side, probably). People that watched Seinfeld as it aired, then continued to watch network TV comedies into the 2000s. People who like 30 Rock, New Girl, SNL, etc.

                          Sure.

My point was, some of the low ratings might be from people who can't relate to the some of the historical content. Old ads, Saturday morning cartoons, TAB soda, etc. A lot of it comes pretty quickly too as the gags are presented at a rapid clip.
