The only continuity in the whole series is really just metal detecting. There are a few disjointed plot lines. But the joy is in the characters and dialogue.

My favorite seasons are 1 and 3. So get Acorn TV and binge for a week.

If you find anything you enjoy on Acorn TV (or elsewhere), let me know. We are also in the market for another good BBC series.
So we've kept Acorn TV for a bit. Mrs. NWC started watching 'Doc Martin', on the advice of some internet recommendation. It's your typical BBC dramedy, with quirky characters and simple stories. Easy to watch like Detectorists. However, the main character is not very sympathetic. A little like "House", actually. I think I would like it more if they hadn't dialed up his arrogance so much.

Overall, it's enjoyable to watch. I've seen a few episodes here and there, but I don't watch it as much as Mrs. NWC. She likes it more than I do. If you watch the first 3 episodes, I think you'll have a good idea if you want to invest more time. I think there's at least 7 seasons, with ~6 episodes in each.

The series is ultimately about relationships. And the beauty and charms of a simple life.

Completely agree. It makes me want to live the simple life in 'Danebury' (really Framlingham).

Just watched a documentary called “Innocent on Death Row”.

At first I was not convinced he was innocent but the facts bring up suspicion. This dude is not a model citizen but it does not mean he did this crime.

Very interesting case that has me wondering how this has not been overturned or at the least justified a retrial.

The execution of Clinton Young, convicted in a 2001 Midland-area murder, was stopped by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. The courts will look into claims that Young's co-defendant lied in his testimony against Young.

I really liked the theme music - thought it very fitting for the show.

Acting upon JL's rec (and those of armenag and others earlier), we're nearing the end of Season 2 of Detectorists and are really enjoying it. One line in the review the Dude linked is spot on: "Detectorists is a show so refreshingly in the slow lane that it takes an episode or two to adjust to its languid pacing." But yes, it's worth making the adjustment. We start laughing whenever "Simon and Garfunkel" make a cameo appearance as we anticipate how Lance and Andy are going to mock them. And it's interesting that Becky's mom is Diana Rigg (Emma Peel in The Avengers and a Bond girl). That's a very attractive gene pool.

We started the Doc Martin series last fall and have just two episodes left (not counting the current season that's in production) and have enjoyed it, although I agree the titular character is a little too over-the-top. Still, it's been enjoyable and we're going to visit Portwenn (Port Isaac) this June; looking forward to visiting the surgery, Mrs. Tishell's apothecary, and whatever pub the Larges have their hands in. We'll ask P.C. Penhale for directions.

I didn't realize Becky's mom had those roles. Cool.

I would love to visit Port Isaac. Do say hi to Bert for me.

I doubt this positive view of S2 is shared by the casual viewer, however. I have a feeling the casual TV viewer really liked season 1 and then hated season 2 because it didn't go anywhere. That's not true, but there were a few slow spots that had to be waded through to get to the good stuff. All in all, I think it's one of the best comedies out there right now.

                      Spoiler for *:
Rose's trip to Paris is just a drag and feels so out of place/character and unnecessary. Also, Abe's continuous downward spiral is a bit overdone. Why should I believe that a top-notch mathematician and engineer, whose life is built on stability and probability, is suddenly so emotionally unstable? Both of those storylines detract from the character development we're seeing in Midge, Joel, and Susie.

                      this show is great

I enjoyed Agatha Christie's Ordeal by Innocence. Some twisted characters.

Just finished the 4 episodes of “Inside the Moussad”.

It is all in Hebrew/Arabic. I found this to be rather interesting. It is a bit slow but I stick with it. The “What if” moments were interesting. For example, they had the chance to kill the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini before he came into power.

We just finished Season 3 of Detectorists and agree strongly with you and NWC that, while we wish the show would continue, it was great that it finished on such a high note. A simple story, but strong messages about loving relationships, human kindness, and even karmic rewards. The final episode's amusing yet touching gazebo scene was a fine homage to the Amish barnraising in the 1985 film, Witness, a beautiful display of community and generosity.

A modest series, and yet an outstanding one.

I hadn’t thought of Witness during that scene. I like it!

I have recommended Detectorists to a bunch of people. I think it ranks as one of JL’s best recommendations, right up there with his smoked ribs recipe.

I just pulled up the Witness barnraising scene and was pleased to discover that the Detectorists used the same music. I've always loved that scene and used it many years ago when I was putting together a service project for a widow in our ward. All I did was show that scene in Priesthood Meeting (I liked using an R-rated movie to promote a worthy cause) with no intro, after which I said something like, "Brethren, this Saturday we have an opportunity to help Sis. ______ by cleaning up her yard and painting the exterior of her house. Eats will be provided. Please be there at 8 am." We had a couple dozen show up, two with state-of-the-art paint sprayers, and by the end of the day the small house and yard had been transformed into something very attractive. Can't remember if I had Mrs. PAC play the Kelly McGillis role during and after the event.
