Next Gen Console Wars: The official xBox One v. PS4 Thread

A quick search didn't yield any official threads, so I figured why not start one.

I've found my gaming time to have declined fairly steadily over the last two years. Essentially now, it's NCAA 14 (RIP) and likely to be Madden for me, maybe NBA 2K14 and more for the kiddos. We have a Kinect, but play it maybe 15% of the total gaming time (and even that is probably estimating high).

With that, the discussion has been around getting a next-gen console for Christmas. Based on the initial research, it seemed like it was an easy call to go with the PS4 and not the xBox One thanks to the decision to require internet, used game fees, etc. Smartly, Microsoft appears to have renegged on those requirements which brings it closer to a draw.

My limited research looks to indicate that the PS4 is still the superior hardward product, and is $100 cheaper. The xBox does come with/require the Kinect, so that essentially is the price difference. Kinect isn't a make or break thing for me (it probably would be with backward compatibility) it's nice, but it just isn't the biggest part of gaming for me (or my kids, really).

So, what's the word on the street. Anybody else pre-ordering? What console? Why?

I am indifferent but will be getting the xbox 1 because that is what my two sons friends are getting and they don't want to be the only one of their friends to be on a different system. All things being equal, I'd probably lean towards XB1 because of familiarity. I'm also not sure if PSN is charging for their online this next round. Verdad?

yeah subscription service PlayStation Plus will be required for online multi-player games.

I'll probably get an Xbox One, though I didn't preorder. I have no clue how fast Microsoft will be able to restock new consoles after the initial launch, so I'm not sure when I'll get one.

ive heard this term thrown around in the media quite a bit but I dont see much "next gen" about PS4. graphics and processing speed are constantly improving, but not enough to change how games are designed. the xbox1 integrates new features into the gaming experience that are fully immersive and simply not possible with the ps console in its current form. there is a reason PS dropped the price. if it were the same price there would be very little reason to buy it.

look at the PS arc over the past 10 years. it missed every step of the way. Online P2P, motion cap technology, handheld market vs online distribution proliferation, and now interactive gaming. PS has missed on each one of these.

For now, if the main goal is simply to play the sports games or Ghosts, there is basically zero difference between the two except one is cheaper and the other has a far superior online experience.

if you watch the xb1 launch video it gives you a pretty good idea of the functionality as a home entertainment system. The response times are incredible. What is interesting is seeing micrsoft continue to steal design and functionality from apples iOS and apply it within its ecosystem, while apple's latest update seems to be a nod towards the android environment, even its look and feel (at least in my opinion).

From a game perspective, when I was at E3 I was able to play the xb1 launch titles like Ryse and Forza. The coolest demo was Dead Rising. Prior to the demo, you badged in using your E3 pass and xb1 immediately had all of your info from the conference. During the game, there is a scene in which you are walking in a bar and the phone on the wall rings. xb1 actually calls your cell phone and you can pick it up and speak to an NPC which will, in turn, give you information about your character's next moves. It was fantastic and some what mindblowing that something so simple could have such a dramatic effect. additionally, depending on how your house is wired, some games will be able to tap into your room lighting using an app that connects the lighting to the console. Obviously you can use the console to dim or raise your lights, but part of the game demo also dimmed the lights automatically as your character went into a dark tunnel, raised the lights when it came out. During a storm, the lights flickered.

That sort of stuff is "next gen." That changes the entire game for everyone from designers to players. Adding a more powerful processor is not next gen. that is simply updating your hardware (important, dont get me wrong, but nothing amazing).

it should be agnostic. the key with the rift is getting the right games tied to it. the tech already is fully functioning. Amazing stuff.

This is going to be the real next gen. Horror games are going to be downright terrifying on it. Once you get it on with some headphones there goes your vision and hearing connection to the real world.

You should YouTube some of the demos. People get scared shitless playing it. There was one of a rollercoaster I believe and the guy playing it is scared to death of coasters. It is pretty hilarious.

My little kids like Kinect, but I don't want to wait for months to play Ghosts. I haven't played any CoD in like 6 months and I'm starting to feel it again. (My wife thinks I've quit for good. )
