  • The "did you know this rents at Redbox?" thread

This is a facsimile of the The "did you know this Steams on Netflix?" thread thread.

And so, apologies to SteelBlue but...

Every now and again as NetflixRedbox adds new content, I come across something that I think would interest others. I thought it might be nice to have a thread dedicated to our finds in that arena.

For my first submission: Robot and Frank (link).
This is a fun, charming, and dare I say "sweet" movie about an old man and his new in-house-care robot. I missed this at the theater (but can't really imagine it had a wide release anyway). A nice find, rent it while it is available. Enjoy!

I don't know much about Redbox, but I was under the impression that every location is somewhat different.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Not sure. Some movies perhaps are only available regionally... but most (I believe) are available nationally. "Robot and Frank" is available at 6 Redbox kiosks within 1.5 mi of your place... 5 of which are 7-11's. Nice neighborhood.

ha. You are the worst at Seattle neighborhoods. I just checked the locations map and not a single one of those is in my 'hood!

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (link)
A friend of mine told me to pick this up a few months ago, but finally got around to seeking it out last night. Unfortunately, there are very few copies in circulation now (I had to take a small drive to get one... and perhaps may have grabbed the closest one to MG!). Cursory google search reveals KL and Commando were way out in front of the curve on this one... it is a gem. Worth the trip.

Edit... I was intending to add this small bit from the movie:

Sheikh Muhammed: You're not a religious man?
Dr. Alfred Jones: No. No, I'm not.
Sheikh Muhammed: But you're a fisherman, Dr. Jones.
Dr. Alfred Jones: I'm sorry, I don't follow.
Sheikh Muhammed: How many hours do you fish before you catch something? Dozens?
Dr. Alfred Jones: Gosh, hundreds sometimes.
Sheikh Muhammed: Is that a good use of your time for a facts-and-figures man? But you persist in the wind and the rain and the cold with such poor odds of success. Why? Because you are a man of faith Dr. Alfred. In the end, you are are rewarded for your faith and constancy with a fish.
Sometimes a film can be about faith without being religious. This film nails that. SU would love this one.

              A Monster in Paris (link)
After your kids have exhausted the supply of animated movies available at Redbox (Rise of the Guardians, Wreck-It Ralph, etc) and in advance of some of this summer's animated releases (Despicable Me sequel, Planes, etc), you might want to give the whimsical French-produced "A Monster in Paris" a try. It is a quirky little movie, but not without a lot of charm. Recommended family viewing.

Note: the film has been re-dubbed using English voice actors. FYI.

                Intouchables (link)
Based on a true story, Intouchables presents the story of a quadriplegic French millionaire and his relationship with an untrained caregiver, who is selected somewhat impulsively. The two become unlikely friends. The movie is quite subdued, but offers an excellent character study that does not grind despite the lack of, well, an action-driven plot whatsoever. Reviewed by PAC here.

                In French, with English subtitles.

Also, and as an aside, the content of this film does not merit the R-rating (e.g. The King's Speech). I would recommend this film to any teenager.

Due to your recommendation we got this last night, the kids really liked it.

OK, yeah, this Apatow movie did not fly under the radar, so you probably already know this thing is at redbox.

The film, as you also may know, received mixed reviews. Our very own MG called it "uneven, but funny". I agree... but not just funny, this film is really fucking funny. I actually watched this one the weekend before last, but something happened today that was represented hilariously (and also very truthfully) in the film. In fact, many of the vignettes in this film were pulled straight out of our lives as 40-yr-old parents of young children... well, minus all most of the f-bombs. Rudd and Apatow's wife (and Apatow's kids) nailed so many scenes that I almost presumed he was creating a crude biopic of our family. And, yes, it is crude at times... the language is strong (almost Lebowski-esque), but goddammit it is just good fun and very tender at times to boot (the reconciliation scene in the ER was quite touching). Recommended. Two thumbs up.
