    Cinematic education

Since I started my new job, I've had the opportunity to begin to see some of the great films I've missed out on up to this point in my life. The list so far is "The Big Lebowski", "Fargo", "Raising Arizona", and "Pulp Fiction".

Operating under the assumption I haven't seen any movie made before 1981, no R-rated movies made before 2007, and basically no indie movies whatsoever, what are some movies my CUF friends would recommend for my infantile palette?

Well the Godfather and the Godfather II are must sees. Along with Taxi Driver.

If you haven't seen Strange Brew, I would suggest you do so immediately.

If you really want a "Cinematic Education" check out The Criterion Collection. I'll sometimes mix up some of those artsy films with my usual Netflix fare of television series and mindless comedies. Sometimes they are boring (ie. educational) but usually they are very good.

I discovered one of my all time favorite films this way: The Battle of Algiers.

Also, watch Do The Right Thing.

I really like Spike Lee's work. Actually, what might be a great way to get a film education would be to stick to a single director for three films at a time.

                    Spike Lee
                    Wes Anderson
                    Q. Tarentino
                    Akira Kurosawa
                    Coen Brothers
                    Woody Allen
                    Gus Van Sant
                    Jim Jarmusch
                    Ang Lee
                    Pedro Almodovar

And if you are totally abandoning your LDS cinematic reservations, watch one of my very favorites: Y tu mamá también

Can you share four or five of your favorite and least favorite films? I could make a recommendation or two....

                        I endorse your list.

Regarding "Y tu mama tambien," I love it. I love anything but Alfonso Cuaron. He's a great director. Another great Mexican director is Alejandro González Iñárritu. See Amores Perros, 21 Grams, and Babel.
