Hey I don't always agree with those ratings but they are pretty reliable overall. In this case I think they got it right.

OK, I forced myself to watch the entire film on a flight yesterday (I had only watched the first 20 minutes or so). God help me, but I can't understand what the fuss is about this movie. The middle part was OK, but I prefer films that have a plot. I can't imagine what they would do with a sequel. More random shots of Goblin Valley and the salt flats?

I see that the IMDB rating is 6.8/10. That sounds about right.

(btw: the drowning scene was filmed at Barton Springs in Austin - the coolest public swimming pool anywhere)

FTR, the screen was probably 10 inches. It was a new plane and the seatback screen were very impressive. 16:9 and HD.

I actually started to watch Tree of Life on a flight as well--I had downloaded it in advance to my iPad. I immediately recognized that that wasn't going to work and I shut it off and waited until I could see it properly. I'm glad I did. I won't venture a defense of the film here. Maybe I'll post something later.

Have I crossed the Rubicon yet again? We may need a stop light there with all my going back and forth. I understand that some very smart people don't "get" it, where "getting it" does not mean that don't understand what's going on or that they can't talk intelligently about it, raise good points, etc. But that it leaves them cold and, in an attempt to explain why it doesn't resonate with them, they resort to calling it pretentious or whatever. But I'll freely admit that I'm a card-carrying movie snob who thinks that Tarkovsky's biggest problem is that he doesn't know how to hold a shot for long enough.

I love this guy.

A list of "litmus test" movies could be an interesting conversation.

Caught up with this about week ago and enjoyed it. It was a bit frustrating to watch these things happen in the character's lives and relationships without any explanation of what was going on, but I think that can also be a fair reflection of what life/relationships are like in the sense that sometimes you just don't know or understand it yourself, even when you're in the midst of it.
