The Tree of Life 2: Malick's New Film Has a Trailer

Visually it sure looks like the Tree of Life. The Venice premiere was met with both cheers and boos, which is also what happened with the ToL. However, so far this one is not reviewing nearly as well. I'll probably see it, because despite sections that bored me to tears, the ToL probably had the biggest emotional, spiritual and worldview impact on me than any other films I've seen in years.

IMDB shows him with two releases in 2013 and one in 2014. To the Wonder was technically released in 2012 at Cannes. This is amazing, given the fact that he had only released 4 films before the Tree of Life.

Agreed. This is a litmus test film for me. If you prattle on how about you think Tree of Life is pretentious or whatever, you may be a nice person but I will know that I can safely disregard any other views you might have about film generally.

LOL. I feel the same way. I've heard the film referred to as pretentious by several wannabe film critics and I just laugh. I found the film extremely sincere. I actually think people resort to calling it pretentious because they are uncomfortable with the religious undertones (and overtones).

Have I crossed the Rubicon yet again? We may need a stop light there with all my going back and forth. I understand that some very smart people don't "get" it, where "getting it" does not mean that don't understand what's going on or that they can't talk intelligently about it, raise good points, etc. But that it leaves them cold and, in an attempt to explain why it doesn't resonate with them, they resort to calling it pretentious or whatever. But I'll freely admit that I'm a card-carrying movie snob who thinks that Tarkovsky's biggest problem is that he doesn't know how to hold a shot for long enough.

If it makes you feel better, I won't call it pretentious. Of course, I'm a card carrying movie hater who thinks that 99.9% of what has come out of Hollywood in the last 20 years is absolute garbage, so I didn't see it. But I won't hold it against you if you liked it. I'll just quietly laugh that you wasted the time and money to see it.

I had my issues with ToL, especially the final scene on the beach, which I hated. Some of the montage scene was pretty iffy too, I guess. When the dinosaur trades justice for mercy (or whatever that dichotomy was; it's been a while) I laughed. But Malick's depiction of the family's home life, especially the relationship between the father and the boys, was devastatingly real for me.

I agree with you on The New World, and I am a big Malick fan. I couldn't even make it through the whole thing. You might not like other Malick films, but I wouldn't make that conclusion based on The New World.

OK, I forced myself to watch the entire film on a flight yesterday (I had only watched the first 20 minutes or so). God help me, but I can't understand what the fuss is about this movie. The middle part was OK, but I prefer films that have a plot. I can't imagine what they would do with a sequel. More random shots of Goblin Valley and the salt flats?

I see that the IMDB rating is 6.8/10. That sounds about right.

(btw: the drowning scene was filmed at Barton Springs in Austin - the coolest public swimming pool anywhere)
