    The underrated song/artist thread

It seems to me that some of the best music gets the least attention. Maybe it's just my musical taste, but I've often wondered why some of artists' best stuff doesn't get released or gets very little air time. Moreover, some of the best artists are overlooked for people who just don't do much for me. Here are a few songs and artists on my underrated list:

Garth's cowboy songs: Brooks had three songs, "The Cowboy Song," "Cowboy Bill," and "The Wolves," that were outstanding - never released. The best song he ever released was "Much Too Young" - another cowboy song.

Chris Ledoux: "Song of Wyoming" and "Photo Finish" - two of his best

    Toby Keith: "Huckleberry"

Randy Travis: "Storms of Life" and "Promises"

    Hank Jr.: "Fat Friends"

Most songs by Guy Clark and Billy Joe Shaver. Pat Green finally got a little recognition, but Clark and Shaver never did.

These are just a few, and there are many more. I'm interested in hearing others. Always willing to listen to an overlooked song that I may enjoy.

Randy Travis did a charity concert at a local baptist church. According to a coworker, he has lost his voice and sounds horrible. He mentioned that people were disappointed with the performance, even though it was only $10/seat and it went for a good cause.

I agree with your selection for Garth, "Much Too Young" is a great song, that doesn't get much credit compared to his others.
    I'm your huckleberry.

The best Chris Ledoux song is Western Skies. I do agree with your Garth selection

          This old highway's getting longer
tougher broncs? you know I can't recall
a worn out tape of Chris Ledoux

seem to be the only friends I have left at all

I think the Jayhawks are a vastly underrated band. Or used to be.

On Hank Jr, he's got a song called "I'd love to knock the hell out of you" that's pretty funny, good.

                    Some others:

                    Carbon Leaf
                    The Pat McGee Band
                    The Wallflowers

and a video or two for ya...

"They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

I really like the Jayhawks. The Thorns did a really good remake of their song Blue.

The Thorns is another unheralded band in spite of combining three really good songwriters.

How are we defining underrated here? Obscure bands that didn't get the recognition they deserved or known bands that had a lot of lesser known work?

Underrated music. This can either be underrated singles by well-known artists or complete bodies of work by obscure artists.

I think "Much too Young" might be the best cowboy tune of the past 25 years.

I am going to go away from the cowboy theme here. My two favorite underrated are Urge Overkill , especially the album from 1993, Saturation and Morphine.
