"They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.
Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.
I was underwhelmed, but then I wasn't paying close attention.
I think the Jeff Daniels character went through so much trauma at whatever Andersonville he was at, that he was rendered impotent. My husband thinks that they actually sliced a man part off.

What do you think?
Perhaps Randolph McCoy was impotent initially upon his return home but I think he probably recovered. It was obvious that he did suffer as a POW. I doubt that the Yankees maimed Randolph in that manner but could see how one could interpet scenes in the film that way.
I think the greater theme is that McCoy stayed and fought a losing battle - he did his duty as he saw it - at great personal cost. Meanwhile Anderson Hatfield saw the futility of the war and left it early (deserted) and was running a succesful lumber operation by the time McCoy limped home. McCoy is embittered because he expects a just God to punish Hatfield - perhaps make him suffer as he did as a POW. Instead Hatfield is prosperous.
There's also the murder of Randolph's Yankee brother Harmon McCoy by Anderson's uncle Jim Vance. Kind of ironic that Harmon is killed because he chose to fight with the Yankees and had a honorable discharge because of a broken leg; while Anderson, who deserted, is welcomed by his Uncle Vance who is leader of the Home Guards and whose job it is to detain deserters.
I started to watch it with my wife, and then the little kid stuck the gun to his chin. That ended that. So I need to watch this when everyone is asleep.

My 3rd great grandpa was incarcerated in Andersonville. He recovered enough to propogate the species.

That was tough to watch.

"I love pulling the bone. Really though, what guy doesn't?" - CJF
13.9 million viewers last night. That is very impressive.
I didn't even hear about this show until Sunday. 13.9 million viewers for a cable show is huge.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
