That's because TV is nothing but vacuous reality TV -- especially come summer time. People are starved for any creative programming with writing and acting as opposed to seeing the exploits of gay Alaskan cops that horde Peruvian shrunken heads they got while cruising the Yukon Territory across a lake covered by 2 feet of ice.

      I would so watch that.
      Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Either that or people were so shocked to see something historical on the History channel that they watched in morbid curiosity.

History Channel struck gold. The History Channel has been a wasteland...worse than Food Nanny and American Ride. So far Hatfield and McCoys has more than surpassed my expectations.

Watched Part I last night and the beginning of part II this morning. So far I'm really enjoying it. Tom Berringer plays a pretty good low life.

My interest perked up with the Romeo and Juliet story.

              Spoiler for spoiler:
But then, I went to wikipedia and read the real romance story (which should take place in the next segment) and came away sad. It doesn't end well.

              Interesting tidbits:

              Juliana Hatfield is a Hatfield.
Jim McCoy was supposedly a real McCoy.

Did a little reading on Wikipedia to see how much the mini series is deviating from history. Randolph McCoy fathered four additional children with his wife Sarah after 1865 when he returned home from the Civil War so 'Ol Rand's man parts were still intact. Also found out that Sarah was his first cousin but that was probably not uncommon for that era.

Are you thinking of Bill Paxton here? Randolph McCoy...?

She already mentioned she "wasn't paying close attention". I'm sure it was a reference to Bill Paxton portraying Randolph (Ol' Ran'l) McCoy. It didn't help that Jeff Daniels kept interupting the show with commericials for his new news anchor show.

Easy there. Pawn Stars is a show I can watch all day, even as contrived as many of the situations are. And isn't American Pickers on the History channel? You don't enjoy watching grown men haggle over $5?

Looks like we're going to get more of these kinds of shows from the History Channel.

They've got a ton a stories to tell, they're the History Channel dammit.

Here's one right off the top of my head, and it's influenced by last Sunday's Game of Thrones episode -- but how about a miniseries about Charles Martel and the Battle of Tours? Would the History Channel even touch this? Muslims nowadays seem to get pissed off over a lot less than they would over a dramatic recounting of the story of a European army beating back an aggressive Islamic army.

Maybe they could extend it out and have it be about Charles Martel through Charlemagne, take some of the emphasis off the Battle of Tours. This might be too ambitious for the History Channel. This would require some major coin.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
