You should check with the teacher. The upright is fretless and the electric bass is fretted. There is a HUGE difference in learning to play frets or fretless. Maybe the teacher doesn't care but I would check first. All of the fretless spacing techniques don't mean much on a fretted bass (although I know nothing about how to play fretless so I could be wildly wrong).
    PLesa excuse the tpyos.

I followed this advice. Here's what the grandma scholarship came up with so he can practice at home.

We've had it 48 hours. The instruction at school thus far is learning the parts of the instrument and how read music. I let him try and match the note I played on the piano. Then, the blonde one tried drums, and the brunette one played her guitar. She practices. He will. If school doesn't do enough, after Christmas I'll pay for lessons.

Just bought a student violin for my 10-year-old to use in orchestra this year. The cost was about the same as renting through the school (and much cheaper than renting/buying through a local music shop). Relative to the price, it seemed to have pretty good reviews.

I just bought a guitar for my son's 7th grade guitar class, which is annoying because I have several guitars he could have used, but the teacher wants them to have a classical with nylon strings. I can see the nylon being better for a beginner's fingers, but whatever. Luckily, he's big enough to merit a full size guitar, so when he eventually gives up on it, I've got another guitar for myself!

You should have had a classical this entire time! They are fun.

I admit I'm glad to have reason to buy a classical. I've never really played much on one. I think my opinion of them was colored by the fact that my high school guitar teacher, who didn't know how to play the guitar, used one.

We're springing for paid bass, guitar, and piano lessons starting this week for the three bairn. No screens of any kind and no Legos until they practice. We'll see if this works.

Yes. The brunette's on guitar and the blonde's on the piano.
