I was driving to work this morning listening to an "Urban Legends" playlist I put together over the weekend and midway through my commute I came across "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins.
I have always enjoyed this song. Very muted at the beginning, ominous, haunting. All of it leads to the crescendo at the end of the song with a full instrumentation and Phil's vocals growing more and more angry.
What I never thought about before today is that the drum fill that bridges the two parts of that song is probably the most iconic drum fill of all time (or at least one of them). I can't think of a more recognizable drum fill that the average person would know and be able to identify. And no matter how many times I hear that song, I almost have to restrain myself from doing Air Drums when the fill hits. In fact, if I am in my car, you best get out of the way or else you will get hit by some air drumsticks.
For the rare few that don't know what I am talking about, you can check out the video @3:16.

I started thinking of other songs with addicting and recognizable drum fills that almost require the listener to bust out their Air Drum kit. I came up with a few from the past.
Really, this entire song but especially @4:24. Even Wayne and Garth agree.

Is this technically a fill? Don't know. But I drum along every time.

Keep in mind I am not talking about drum solos and I am thinking about songs that most people would know so that would basically exclude almost all Rush songs, thank goodness.
I have an idea for this weekend's playlist....Drum Fills. Can't wait for Sunday.
